Smart Stat: 30% - Ryan Moore's strike rate at Lingfield
It pays to take note of Ryan Moore's rides at Lingfield as he operates at an astonishing 30% strike rate at a tight venue where jockeyship is crucial (he has an overall strike rate of around 19% in the last five seasons). Moore advertised his skills the last time he visited Lingfield, firing in a four-timer a fortnight ago. His booking on Richard Hughes' Crimson Sand in the five-furlong maiden suggests a much-improved effort is expected. Crimson Sand finished down the field in a big-field maiden on debut at Newbury last year but he should find this much easier and is open to plenty of improvement following a break and a gelding operation.
Smart Stat: 5 - Paul Nicholls' number of winners in the past ten runnings
Given the proximity of this Kempton card to the Cheltenham Festival it's no surprise that the Pendil Novices' Chase is often not the most competitive of Grade 2s. Paul Nicholls is renowned for how well he places his horses so it's no surprise that he has dominated this event that often takes less winning than other races of a similar grade. He has won the prize ten times in total and on five occasions in the last decade. This year he relies on Tamaroc du Mathan, who heads Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings having chased home Shishkin in the Wayward Lad Novices' Chase at this venue last time. He had little chance against a top-class rival that day but still ran to a level that sets a clear standard, and he will be tough to beat if producing a similar performance up in trip.
Smart Stat: £112.27 - Matt Sheppard's profit to a £1 level stake with only one runner on the card
Matt Sheppard shows an extraordinary level-stake profit when relying on only one runner at a meeting and he sends Cyclop on the long journey north to Newcastle from his Herefordshire base to contest the Eider Chase. The booking of champion jockey Brian Hughes is a further sign that Cyclop is not just making up the numbers. Cyclop was in good form for Tom Symonds earlier in the season, wasn't disgraced on his first start for Sheppard last time and should be suited by the stuff test the Eider provides.
