Modern Games - 15:05 Newmarket
Smart Stat: 2 - Charlie Appleby's number of winners in past 10 runnings
Smart Stat: 27% - Charlie Appleby's strike rate at Newmarket (July) since the start of the 2017 season
Modern Games was very green when fifth on his debut at Haydock earlier this month, needing to be pushed along before halfway and making no impression in the closing stages. He can be expected to leave that form behind with the experience under his belt and this doesn't look the strongest maiden for the track on paper. Trainer Charlie Appleby has enjoyed plenty of success at Newmarket in recent years, notably winning two of the last five renewals of this race, so Modern Games could be worth siding with to open his account at the second attempt.
Mohaafeth - 15:15 York
Smart Stat: 23% - William Haggas's strike rate in mid-season
Mohaafeth achieved a very smart level of form when completing a four-timer in the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, quickening to the front over a furlong out and just needing to be kept up to his work to win a length and three quarters in comfortable fashion. He has improved with every start this season and leaves the impression he has an even bigger effort in the locker when the situation demands it. Therefore, he is fancied to take up in grade here in his stride to record his fifth win in succession for William Haggas, who has his yard in rude health at present (78% of horses running to form).
Wahraan - 15:40 Newmarket
Smart Stat: 20% - Sir Michael Stoute's strike rate in mid-season
Sir Michael Stoute also has the 'Hot Trainer' Flag to denote that his yard is in top form, identifying Wahraan as one to keep on the right side when he lines up in this handicap. He was beaten just half a length on his handicap debut at Salisbury in May and then made the most of a good opportunity to get off the mark back in a maiden at Pontefract last time. He remains open to more improvement after only five starts and the balance of his form suggests a BHA mark of 86 is unlikely to prove beyond him.
