De Barley Basket – 14:10 Plumpton
Smart Stat: £36.19 – Ben Pauling’s profit to a £1 level stake with hurdling debutants
De Barley Basket is a winning pointer and a brother to smart hurdlers Global Citizen and De Plotting Shed, so he has plenty to recommend him ahead of his hurdling debut. Another thing in his favour is trainer Ben Pauling’s record with hurdling newcomers. A healthy level-stake profit shows they are usually tuned up, and the six-year-old is of obvious interest.
Comvida – 14:20 Pontefract
Smart Stat: £106.63 – Hugo Palmer’s profit to a £1 level stake with horses being stepped up in trip
Comvida tackles a mile on testing ground at a stiff track having never raced beyond seven furlongs before. However, trainer Hugo Palmer’s stunning record with horses being stepped up in trip - and therefore his judgement of which horses will benefit from a stiffer test - offers hope Comvida may improve. The two-year-old’s pedigree also suggests the step up in trip might help. His dam won over a mile and a half and is a half-sister to the three-time Arc runner-up Youmzain, so stamina should not be an issue and an improvement is possible.
Alnadir - Windsor 16:00
Smart Stat: £92.90 – Simon Crisford’s profit to a £1 level stake when having one runner at a Flat meeting
Alnadir is Simon Crisford’s only runner at Windsor this afternoon, and that bodes well, keeping in mind the trainer’s excellent record when sending just one horse to a meeting. Alnadir was brought down at Chelmsford on his penultimate start but showed that nasty incident had left no ill-effects when finishing fifth at Newcastle, where he shaped well despite meeting trouble. That showed he remains in decent heart and can be competitive off this mark (was dropped 1lb).
