Pink Crystal - 14:20 Brighton
Smart Stat: 21% - Tom Marquand's strike rate at Brighton
Pink Crystal progressed further to double her career tally at Thirsk two weeks ago, hitting the front inside the final furlong and keeping going well from there to win by a length and a half. She is only 6 lb higher in the weights today and there is no reason why she shouldn't continue to give a good account for the in-form William Haggas yard (68% of horses running to form). Haggas won this race 12 months ago with a similar type and the booking of Tom Marquand also gives cause for optimism at a track he rides particularly well.
Brazen Idol - 16:00 Thirsk
Smart Stat: £68.22 - Simon Pearce's profit to a £1 level stake when having one runner at a Flat meeting
Brazen Idol produced a career best to regain the winning thread over this course and distance last time, staying on well to land the spoils by a length. The manner of that victory suggests he was full value for a 5 lb rise in the weights and it’s highly unlikely that we’ve seen the best of him yet after just eight starts in total and five for Simon Pearce (formerly trained by William Jarvis). He is certainly going the right way and another bold bid seems assured in a big-field handicap where plenty of his rivals have questions to answer.
Giavellotto - 19:10 Newmarket
Smart Stat: £42.23 - Marco Botti's profit to a £1 level stake when having one runner at a Flat meeting
Giavellotto took another step forward when filling the runner-up spot at Haydock last month, the only negative aspect to his performance being a failure to keep straight once in front. He was still beaten just half a length and pulled three lengths clear of the rest in a race which looks solid form (the fifth has won since). A BHA mark of 97 is unlikely to prove beyond him somewhere down the line and this small-field event looks a good opportunity for him to get his head back in front for Marco Botti.
