Smart Stat: 23% - John & Thady Gosden's strike rate in early season
There is plenty about Tenbury Wells physically – he cost $1,600,000 as a yearling – and he progressed nicely last season, winning at Chelmsford and Ascot and producing his best effort when narrowly touched off in a useful handicap at Sandown. Tenbury Wells is very much the type to improve again as a four-year-old and could hardly be in better hands, so there is plenty to like about his chances on return.
Smart Stat: 21% - Roger Varian's strike rate in early season
Hey Mr was beaten by Imperium Blue on his nursery debut at this course last season but improved to open his account and reverse the form with that rival in grand style at Nottingham just 19 days later. Hey Mr showed a good turn of foot on that occasion, edging right and causing some interference in the closing stages but still readily on top. There should be more to come from him this season and he has the most potential in this field.
Smart Stat: 3 - Mark Johnston's number of winners in past 10 runnings
Mark Johnston has a good record in this race and saddles three, but the most interesting is Kondo Isami, who opened his account in a minor event at Chelmsford when last seen in December. There was some useful pedigrees on show there and the fourth has franked the form by winning twice since. Kondo Isami had the run of things out in front, but it was still an improved performance, quickening the pace from two furlongs out and going clear in the straight for a comfortable success. He is bred to appreciate this step up in trip and an opening mark of 82 is more than fair, so a bold show is expected.
