Gentleman de Mai, a €110,000 purchase after finishing runner-up to Journey With Me in an Irish point, made a promising start to his career under Rules when overcoming inexperience to land a novice hurdle at Ayr in October of 2021. He was off the track for more than a year before returning in a Kelso handicap last month and he shaped with promise in fifth, lacking the experience as well as the pace to make an impact in a race in which they didn't go much of an early gallop. He stayed on nicely, however, and is entitled to improve for the experience, while the conditions are likely to be more testing here which should place a greater emphasis on stamina.

Victory March has fared well since joining Seb Spencer, winning two of his four outings for this yard, including over this course and distance last time. Victory March had finished a creditable second on his penultimate outing at Southwell, but he left the impression on that occasion that he would have benefitted from being played later (he wandered under pressure). He was duly held onto for a bit longer here last time and he ran out a comfortable winner, scooting two lengths clear after hitting the front inside the final furlong. That cemented the positive start he has made for this yard, as well as highlighted his effectiveness over this course and distance, and he remains on a fair mark after going up 5 lb in the weights.
