A typical modern-day Ebor in terms of the field, three-year-olds a thing of the past and Valley Forge the only runner with a BHA mark of less than 100 courtesy of his Melrose win last season, but it wasn't a typical Ebor the way it developed, the pace surprisingly slack for a long way and the finish dominated by prominently-ridden ones as a result, Trawlerman the one that did the dictating for the most part and proving most tenacious in the finish after first Earl of Tyrone then Alfred Boucher had seemingly got his measure, the latter rated as having won the race having come from further back than the pair he split.

TRAWLERMAN (IRE) followed up from Goodwood under an inspired Dettori, kept under the far rail in the back straight from his wide draw then able to control the pace from more than a mile out, the patiently-ridden ones unquestionably disadvantaged as a result; made running, out wide back straight, headed over 2f out, rallied to lead again line, proved game.

ALFRED BOUCHER snuck in at the bottom of the weights thanks to a penalty picked up on the first day of the meeting and all but followed up, arguably deserving to given that he split a couple of more prominently-ridden rivals, and his new stable deserves great credit for what they've done with him already; mid-field, travelled smoothly, good headway over 2f out, edged ahead entering final 1f, stayed on, edged out line.

EARL OF TYRONE (IRE) was well positioned and had every chance, confirming himself a smart performer nowadays but not quite able to defy a mark 16 lb higher than at the Curragh a couple of starts back; tracked pace, travelled smoothly, edged ahead over 2f out, headed entering final 1f, one paced.

JOHN LEEPER (IRE) ran up to his best tackling the first handicap of his career, though was better positioned than a few of those around him; chased leaders, shaken up 3f out, not quicken over 1f out; maybe a high-end handicap is the way to go with him from now on, especially as he has given the impression that an end-to-end gallop will suit, and that's something he didn't get in this.

GET SHIRTY (IRE) was better than the result in faring best of those held up, also kept more to the centre in the straight, running a cracker under joint top weight all things considered; steadied at the start, held up, headway under pressure over 2f out, kept on.

EVER PRESENT (IRE) ran well with his reappearance behind him and it's worth remembering this was still just the sixth race of his career on the Flat; mid-field, headway under pressure from 2f out, kept on.

EUCHEN GLEN shaped encouragingly for the second outing in succession, doing well under the circumstances and clearly on a mark he can win a good handicap from this season; dropped out, travelled better than most, still plenty to do 3f out, had to pick way through from 2f out, nearest at the finish, left poorly placed; he's twice been well held in the November Handicap when well fancied but will maybe put that right at the age of 9.

SHANROE ran at least as well as when finishing fourth 12 months earlier, 4 lb higher this time round (penalised for Galway) and once again shaping as though he should be at least as effective over 2m, taking time to get going after being well positioned the way things developed; in touch, shaken up 3f out, not quicken soon after, stayed on final 1f.

GLOBAL STORM (IRE) shaped as if still in good form, bettering his finishing position in this 12 months earlier by one place but generally running a better race, acknowledging he was well placed the way things developed; prominent main group, every chance 3f out, no extra entering final 1f.

CANDLEFORD (IRE) wasn't seen to best effect for the second start in succession, not well placed the way things panned out on this occasion and still to have a proper chance of backing up his Duke of Edinburgh effort; held up, headway when bit short of room over 2f out, never landed a blow.

FANCY MAN (IRE) shaped as if still in good form, seemingly stretched by this first attempt at 14f after being well positioned; chased leaders, lost place from 2f out.

VALLEY FORGE was able to run as a result of winning the Melrose 12 months earlier but faced a stiff task carrying 8 lb more than his current mark and wasn't up to it; mid-field, bumped over 2f out, made no impression.

RODRIGO DIAZ wasn't seen to best effect under a typical Spencer ride but whether he's well enough treated these days for a handicap such as this is open to question, anyway; dropped out, shaken up under 4f out, not clear run over 2f out, never dangerous.

ENEMY wasn't seen to best effect under a typically patient ride, though whether he's good enough to defy a mark this high is open to doubt anyway; held up, pushed along 3f out, never a threat.

OKITA SOUSHI (IRE) wasn't in anything like the same form as when third at Royal Ascot from a 2 lb lower mark, caught a bit wide but that hardly sufficient excuse; mid-field, shaken up under 4f out, not quicken.

LICENCE seemed to find it all a bit much from a lofty mark on his handicap debut, not exactly shaping as if the longer trip was beneficial, either; mid-field, took keen hold, pushed along early in straight, not quicken over 3f out.

MAX VEGA (IRE) had been an unfortunate fifth in this 12 months earlier but his SP told a tale with regards his chance from a higher mark this time round and he was well beaten despite having had the theoretical benefit of racing handily; chased leaders, lost place from 2f out.

BENAUD (IRE) found this a completely different kettle of fish to the minor event he'd won at Bellewstown on his previous start; held up, shaken up 4f out, soon beaten.

RAYMOND TUSK (IRE) never looked like getting competitive in an attempt to better his fourth place in the 2019 renewal; held up, pushed along over 3f out, no response.

GAASSEE (IRE) didn't run quite so poorly as finishing last might suggest, left poorly placed by the tactics employed, too, but even so plainly wasn't in the form that had seen him shape well at Haydock; dropped out, pushed along 3f out, made little impression and eased when clearly beaten final 1f; he's worth a chance to bounce back sooner rather than later.
