was tried beyond 1m for the first time and improved even further on the very high level of form he'd been showing, unbeaten now in 10 starts, the last 6 of them at Group 1 level, his performance here one of the very best seen in Europe in the last decade; held up, travelled strongly, smooth headway 2f out, led 1f out, quickened clear, most impressive; his sire Sea The Stars went on to contest both the Irish Champion and the Arc after his win in the International, victorious in both and producing the performance of his career in defeating a stellar field at Leopardstown, for Baaeed, a crack at Vadeni in Ireland or proving himself over still further against the best in Europe and beyond at Longchamp surely offering a more fitting climax to his career than a likely lap of honour in the Champion Stakes at Ascot.

couldn't repeat last year's impressive victory, but he lost little in defeat against such a good opponent as Baaeed, quickly putting his Ascot disappointment behind him, away on terms this time and all in all seeming in good heart, likely to continue to give a good account; tracked pace, travelled well, led over 2f out, headed 1f out, kept on, no match for winner.

remains in good form, not in the same class as the first 2, but making the most of a race run to suit, doing good work late on to again get the better of Dubai Honour; slowly into stride, in rear, took keen hold, ridden over 3f out, stayed on final 1f, nearest at the finish.

ran creditably, back at the very highest level, though, just like last time, he got edged out by Sir Busker after not keeping straight in the closing stages, 2 defeats at very short odds in running since his last win suggesting he's not one to back at short odds back down in grade; held up, shaken up over 2f out, not quicken, wandered, faded close home.

turned in a lacklustre display, the one disappointment of the race, a first below-par effort in his career, in the right hands to ensure that he's right back on song when he returns; waited with, pushed along early in straight, not quicken, weakened final 1f.

back down in trip, had a lot of use made of him and finished well held, though his performance was a factor in ensuring the right conditions for Baaeed to run so well; raced clear, shaken up halfway, headed over 2f out, weakened soon after.

The fiftieeth anniversary of what has become one of the great races in the British Flat calendar, the Derby winner Roberto inflicting the only defeat of his career on the great Brigadier Gerard in that inaugural running, some of the immortals of the turf on the roll of honour in the half-century since, Frankel first among them, Sea The Stars and now his son Baaeed following, having nothing left to prove at a mile and taking his form to another level on his first try at this trip, cruising through a well-run race and finding a devastating turn of foot, his performance - backed up by the timefigure - one of the very best at any distance in Europe this century, his rating bettered in this race only by Frankel in that time.

BAAEED was tried beyond 1m for the first time and improved even further on the very high level of form he'd been showing, unbeaten now in 10 starts, the last 6 of them at Group 1 level, his performance here one of the very best seen in Europe in the last decade; held up, travelled strongly, smooth headway 2f out, led 1f out, quickened clear, most impressive; his sire Sea The Stars went on to contest both the Irish Champion and the Arc after his win in the International, victorious in both and producing the performance of his career in defeating a stellar field at Leopardstown, for Baaeed, a crack at Vadeni in Ireland or proving himself over still further against the best in Europe and beyond at Longchamp surely offering a more fitting climax to his career than a likely lap of honour in the Champion Stakes at Ascot.
