has improved with every run and went one better than on his return in this higher grade, responding really well to his rider's severe urgings (Norton picked up a 9-day whip ban); tracked pace, shaken up over 3f out, challenged inside final 1f, stayed on to lead close home; he's very tough but might just lack the class to make an impact at the highest level.

found only lingering greenness preventing him making it 3-3 after he'd gone like the best horse at the weights, his surge to the front in a well-run race very much the aspect of his performance to focus on, and there's little doubt he's got the ability to figure at the highest level; mid-field, travelled fluently, produced to lead around 2f out, went little way clear briefly, worn down close home.

got closer to his Guineas form this time again without convincing that this trip is really what he wants, ridden differently this time after a slow start (possibly by design); dwelt, in rear, effort from 3f out, headway under 2f out, kept on.

improved further but went harder this time and rather set this good-quality race up for others as a result; led, kicked on over 3f out, headed around 2f out, one paced.

is useful but wasn't quite up to this level, spared a hard time once the others had kicked away; chased leader early, not quicken 3f out, left behind gradually, not knocked about.

had got the better of Encipher at Newbury but, like that one, failed to make an impact in this company; soon steadied, brought wide from over 3f out but lugged left in the process, ridden soon after, faded 1f out.

All 6 ran.

Winning Owner: Highclere T'Bred Racing - George Stubbs

Time: 2m 8.66s Closing Sectional: (3.00f): 37.75s (99.8%)

Overrounds: Industry SP 111%, Betfair SP 97.6%

There may not be a Derby on the horizon - the Epsom Classic having taken place 5 days earlier this year - but this still looks a good Dante, each of the sextet coming from powerful yards and having already shown plenty of ability, and there was no hiding place on the day, front-running Cormorant getting to the 3f marker nearly 5 seconds quicker than the runners in the Musidora, the runner-up looking the best prospect but unable to quite seal matters.

THUNDEROUS (IRE) has improved with every run and went one better than on his return in this higher grade, responding really well to his rider's severe urgings (Norton picked up a 9-day whip ban); tracked pace, shaken up over 3f out, challenged inside final 1f, stayed on to lead close home; he's very tough but might just lack the class to make an impact at the highest level.

HIGHEST GROUND (IRE) found only lingering greenness preventing him making it 3-3 after he'd gone like the best horse at the weights, his surge to the front in a well-run race very much the aspect of his performance to focus on, and there's little doubt he's got the ability to figure at the highest level; mid-field, travelled fluently, produced to lead around 2f out, went little way clear briefly, worn down close home.

JUAN ELCANO got closer to his Guineas form this time again without convincing that this trip is really what he wants, ridden differently this time after a slow start (possibly by design); dwelt, in rear, effort from 3f out, headway under 2f out, kept on.

CORMORANT (IRE) improved further but went harder this time and rather set this good-quality race up for others as a result; led, kicked on over 3f out, headed around 2f out, one paced.

ENCIPHER is useful but wasn't quite up to this level, spared a hard time once the others had kicked away; chased leader early, not quicken 3f out, left behind gradually, not knocked about.
