one of last season's best staying novices, made a highly encouraging return, giving weight and a thrashing to a race-fit rival, this a good platform on which to build for much stronger contests ahead; forced pace, jumped fluently, went with zest, shaken up before 2 out, clear soon after, well on top finish; remains open to improvement and will give a good account again.

a progressive young chaser, tried to eyeball the favourite, to make the most of any fitness advantage, but he was sent packing once off the bridle, paying for his exertions late on; helped force pace, ridden home turn, left behind 2 out; he may yet get back on an upward curve back in handicaps.

on just his third start over fences, was very much up against it and finished well held on his first start since March, not helped by some less-than-convincing jumping; in touch, jumped ponderously, left behind after 3 out.

It would be unwise to get carried away by the form of what was effectively a match, but there was plenty to like about the way in which the winner saw off his rival, every reason to think he's a serious Gold Cup player this season.
