freshened up by an 11-week break, confirmed the impression left in winning at Cartmel on his most recent start over fences that he's better than ever, even here having to overcome unfavourable circumstances in a muddling race, though the form looks weak for the grade; in touch, took time to warm to task (not fluent early), lost place sixth, rallied 5 out, outpaced again 2 out, only fourth crossing last but found plenty to lead again dying strides.

bounced back to form, albeit better placed than most in a tactical affair, also not helping his cause as he mounted a challenge; tracked pace, shaken up 2 out, effort when hung left run-in, led briefly final 50 yds, ran on.

produced a career best on the face of it but how solid it proves remains to be seen, given he seemed just about best equipped to cope with a steadily-run race, his turn of foot seeing him get first run on the pack; in touch out wide, mistake fourth, challenged briefly ninth, quickened to lead approaching 4 out, looked in control briefly last, collared well inside final 1f.

remains in good form, not seen to best effect after 6 weeks off; patiently ridden, still plenty to do home turn, smooth headway approaching 2 out but already conceded first run and then untidy last, finished with running left.

without a tongue strap this time, showed plenty of ability remains as he left his reappearance behind, shaping better than the bare result to boot; ridden more patiently and travelled smoothly settled in rear, still plenty to do 4 out, shaken up next, ran on, nearest at the finish, left poorly placed.

without the headgear this time, again shaped better than the bare result after 4 months off, not well placed the way it went; held up, smooth headway home turn, pushed along after 4 out, not quicken, stayed on late on, never nearer; he's potentially well handicapped now.

underperformed back over fences, a run all the more disappointing considering he had the run of the race and should have been suited by an emphasis on speed; soon led, headed when slow eighth, slow again next, led again 5 out, headed approaching next.

All 10 ran. Fences: 16.

Winning Owner: Leeds Plywood and Doors Ltd

Nothing as progressive as Village Vic in this year's renewal of a handicap that has lost much of its lustre in recent seasons, and matters on the day were made worse by a pace that slowed before halfway and ensured it became a sprint in the straight, the picture changing for good in the dying strides after a few had moved like possible winners for a long way.

LORD WISHES (IRE) freshened up by an 11-week break, confirmed the impression left in winning at Cartmel on his most recent start over fences that he's better than ever, even here having to overcome unfavourable circumstances in a muddling race, though the form looks weak for the grade; in touch, took time to warm to task (not fluent early), lost place sixth, rallied 5 out, outpaced again 2 out, only fourth crossing last but found plenty to lead again dying strides.

DEGOOCH (IRE) produced a career best on the face of it but how solid it proves remains to be seen, given he seemed just about best equipped to cope with a steadily-run race, his turn of foot seeing him get first run on the pack; in touch out wide, mistake fourth, challenged briefly ninth, quickened to lead approaching 4 out, looked in control briefly last, collared well inside final 1f.

ART OF LOGISTICS (IRE) remains in good form, not seen to best effect after 6 weeks off; patiently ridden, still plenty to do home turn, smooth headway approaching 2 out but already conceded first run and then untidy last, finished with running left.
