It usually pays to take a low view of veteran events but this one could prove to be an exception to that rule, with the winner exploiting his much-reduced mark on the back of a breathing operation, whilst the frame was completed by a pair with few miles on the clock in recent seasons and one who was sent off joint favourite for a Cheltenham Festival handicap as recently as last March; the pace was fair.

RAMSES DE TEILLEE (FR) had undergone another breathing operation since last seen and, with his yard in good heart, shaped as if as good as ever with this winning return from 10 months off; made most, went with plenty of zest, jumped well, quickened clear leaving home turn, well on top finish; his previous win came from 12 lb higher so he's likely to remain competitive even once reassessed for this, particularly if kept to veterans' company.

DE RASHER COUNTER stepped up on his recent comeback and clearly retains much of his ability; waited with, typically jumped soundly, smooth headway from halfway, shaken up home turn, kept on for second latter stages, albeit no match for the winner; he's long been viewed as a Grand National horse and, having suffered wretched luck in last season's renewal (wiped out at first Canal Turn), will presumably head back to Aintree for next month's Becher Chase to gain valuable experience of those fences.

CALIPSO COLLONGES (FR) is far more consistent than most who contest veteran events and ran creditably after 9 months off, just unlucky to bump into such a well-handicapped pair back on song; never far away, left behind by winner early in straight, plugged on.

CELEBRE D'ALLEN (FR) strong in the betting, failed to fully meet those expectations after 8 months off but arguably wasn't seen to best effect (came from further back than other principals) and will surely be up to winning a similar event if kept to veterans' company, this longer trip almost certainly within his compass; dropped out, plenty to do circuit out, steady headway approaching back straight, keeping on in fourth when untidy 2 out, no further impression.

GWENCILY BERBAS (FR) made little impact after 8 months off (breathing operation in interim), never on terms under a patient ride.

POTTERS CORNER (IRE) is potentially thrown-in now but he's largely struggled for form outside of cross-country events since winning the 2019 Welsh National and was well held on this return from 7 months off; mid-division, in contention from before halfway, lost place when not fluent back straight and readily outpaced after.

CEPAGE (FR) hasn't stood much racing in recent years and, having sweated up beforehand, turned in a lacklustre display after 11 months off; waited with, struggling from early final circuit, beaten some way out.

COBOLOBO (FR) possibly needed the run after 7 months off, though the manner of his capitulation suggests there might have been other factors at play; handy, already weakening when very slow 3 out, pulled up early in straight (possibly amiss).

WANDRIN STAR (IRE) ran no sort of race after 6 months off (easy to back) and has now been pulled up on 3 of his last 4 starts; in touch early, not fluent eighth, lost touch from halfway, first beaten.

SNOW LEOPARDESS made an inauspicious return from 7 months off, pulled up due to lost irons after an uncharacteristic blunder at the first when in mid-division.
