upped markedly in trip, proved better than ever, avoiding trouble but coping well with the demands of the race and strong at the finish, another feather in the cap of his rookie trainer; in touch, jumped fluently, travelled well, chased leaders fifteenth, led seventeenth, ridden after 3 out, headed briefly last, found extra; the Grand National Trial at Haydock or the Midlands National would be likely options later in the season.

who'd had to miss the Welsh Grand National the previous week, ran well after 7 weeks off, back up to a more suitable trip, meeting some trouble but coming to have every chance and by no means unlucky, just beaten by one totally unexposed at the trip; waited with, travelled well, hampered fifteenth, chased leader seventeenth, mistake 3 out, led briefly approaching last, not fluent there, one paced run-in; will be of interest again in similar long-distance handicaps.

is tumbling in the weights and was well supported but, just as in the Hennessy, he ran a lacklustre race, his jumping again far from what it might have been; mid-field, soon off bridle, blundered second, left behind circuit out, mistakes after; obviously thrown-in if things click but they're not doing at the moment.

Non Runners: PETE THE FEAT (IRE). Fences: 22. Race Distance Adjustment: +92 yds

Winning Owner: Mr Mark Jackson

Time: 8m 4.3s Closing Sectional: (3.80f): 61.00s (102.6%)

Overrounds: Industry SP 117%, Betfair SP 98.5%

This looked wide open beforehand, but conditions were always likely to make for an attritional race and, with jumping errors adding to the casualties, just 5 got round, the form best viewed relatively conservatively, for all that the winner clearly relished the longer distance and the runner-up was well-in on old form; the pace was a good one, just adding to the demands on jumping and emphasis on stamina.

RUSSE BLANC (FR) upped markedly in trip, proved better than ever, avoiding trouble but coping well with the demands of the race and strong at the finish, another feather in the cap of his rookie trainer; in touch, jumped fluently, travelled well, chased leaders fifteenth, led seventeenth, ridden after 3 out, headed briefly last, found extra; the Grand National Trial at Haydock or the Midlands National would be likely options later in the season.
