has really improved over the last 9 months and defied a 5 lb rise for Haydock with another career-best effort, a good test at this trip perfect for him; mid-division, jumped well, headway under pressure after 3 out, disputed second last where bold jump and landed running, stayed on strongly, led near finish, suited by the strong pace; he should be competitive in some of the other valuable handicap chases through the summer.

is thriving this spring, taking more racing and holding it all together well, and he went like the best horse at the weights here but, having done plenty at the head of affairs, just proved vulnerable to a strong stayer at the trip who is also in top form; forced pace, jumped well, travelled strongly, clear 3 out, looked in control still last, collared close home; he'll continue to run well in good races this summer.

A fiercely competitive handicap chase that should be a good guide to other top-end handicaps going into the summer and ought to throw up its share of winners over the coming months; Pistol Whipped was pushed into setting a strong pace and did well to almost hold on.

FRANCKY DU BERLAIS (FR) has really improved over the last 9 months and defied a 5 lb rise for Haydock with another career-best effort, a good test at this trip perfect for him; mid-division, jumped well, headway under pressure after 3 out, disputed second last where bold jump and landed running, stayed on strongly, led near finish, suited by the strong pace; he should be competitive in some of the other valuable handicap chases through the summer.

PISTOL WHIPPED (IRE) is thriving this spring, taking more racing and holding it all together well, and he went like the best horse at the weights here but, having done plenty at the head of affairs, just proved vulnerable to a strong stayer at the trip who is also in top form; forced pace, jumped well, travelled strongly, clear 3 out, looked in control still last, collared close home; he'll continue to run well in good races this summer.

CAPTAIN TOMMY (IRE) ran at least as well in defeat as when winning the time before, giving his all but just lacking the pace to ever quite get to the front runner; chased leaders, disputed second 4 out, kept on.

PINK EYED PEDRO continues in good heart; patiently ridden, pushed along briefly early, steady headway halfway, chased leaders after 4 out, second when untidy last, one paced.

TOPOFTHECOTSWOLDS (IRE) has returned to chasing with 2 good efforts and will no doubt find much less competitive handicaps to contest than this through the summer months; chased leaders, ridden after 4 out, hit last, kept on.

EXELERATOR EXPRESS (FR) ran well upped in grade, this much tougher than the races he's won, plus he'd gone up plenty in the weights, given 10 lb for Haydock; mid-division, chased leaders 3 out, bumped last, one paced.

FALCO BLITZ (IRE) is no more than averagely treated but remains in good form; mid-division, outpaced 5 out, rallied, keeping on when met some trouble run-in.

HAVANA HERMANO (IRE) back over fences, ran respectably and can run in much weaker handicaps this this; held up, some headway 3 out, kept on, never dangerous.

MILITARIAN wasn't disgraced in first-time blinkers in the end but was never really competitive; raced off the pace, jumped sketchily, behind tenth, merely passed beaten horses.

KAUTO THE KING (FR) had his winning run ended in a much hotter race than those he's been winning; mid-division, ridden before 4 out, no extra approaching 2 out.

GO LONG (IRE) found this too competitive; mid-division, pushed along between 5 out and 4 out, held 3 out, made little impression.

REALLY SUPER in first-time visor, shaped better than the distance beaten suggests, pressing Pistol Whipped for a long way and then tiring after an error; pressed leader, mistake 4 out, weakened soon after.

NIETZSCHE ran one of lesser races; in rear, mistake second, never going well.

TANARPINO went backwards from reappearance, this probably just too competitive for him; chased leaders, lost place before 5 out, weakened.

FIDUX (FR) is best excused this run; clouted first, settled mid-field, lost place after halfway, behind 4 out; type to bounce back quickly.

BARTON KNOLL was below form after 7 weeks off; mid-division, ridden 5 out, weakened next.

IMPERIAL PRESENCE (IRE) is struggling for form at present; raced off the pace, hit eighth, struggling after 5 out, tailed off; no longer worth a rating.

BORN SURVIVOR (IRE) failed to complete; held up, fell eighth.
