proved better than ever to bag himself a National 11 weeks on from finishing second in the Welsh version, impressing with how he made winning a gruelling race look so routine, always jumping/travelling well up with the pace, leading 3 out then coming right away on the run-in, seeing out the even longer trip thoroughly; he's young enough to be a fixture in races like this for a while to come.
prominent, jumped well, led before 3 out, drew clear run-in

claimer ridden, ran a cracker, having no problem with the much longer trip and a more clear-cut second best than the final margin suggests, only 3 lengths down when making a significant mistake at the last (jumped well otherwise); mid-division, travelled fluently, in touch circuit out, went second 2 out, bad mistake last, no extra; like the winner, he's got time on his side and will have plenty of options in long-distance handicap chases.

shaped as if still in good form, the trip perhaps stretching him in the end, also racing from 4 lb out of the handicap, enough in this to think he's not done winning for this stable yet; held up, mistake first, headway twentieth, ridden after 4 out, no extra approaching next.

shaped better than the bare result, keeping up with the leaders until early in the home straight despite being a stone out of the handicap, that and perhaps lack of stamina explaining his subsequent capitulation; in touch, close up when untidy 5 out and 4 out, weakened; he'll be of interest back in the right grade granted some recovery time.

The slowest Midlands National since they broke the 10-minute barrier back in 2002 and it was a lop-sided affair as well with Ladbrokes Trophy winner De Rasher Counter conceding upwards of 13 lb all round; nevertheless, it looks strong form so far as races like this go, with well-backed novices in first and second, ahead of a former Scottish National winner and a couple of prolific recent winners; the pace was sound and the principals separated themselves from the rest approaching 4 out.

TRUCKERS LODGE (IRE) proved better than ever to bag himself a National 11 weeks on from finishing second in the Welsh version, impressing with how he made winning a gruelling race look so routine, always jumping/travelling well up with the pace, leading 3 out then coming right away on the run-in, seeing out the even longer trip thoroughly; he's young enough to be a fixture in races like this for a while to come.
