paid a compliment to Kalif du Berlais from Cheltenham as he went one better, upholding previous form with the disappointing favourite, looking ready for a first try over fences beyond 2m from how well he saw things out after finding himself on the back foot; tracked pace, mistake water jump, outpaced before 2 out, rallied to lead run-in, found plenty.

had his winning run ended but would have gone even closer to maintaining it if held together for longer, paying the price somewhat for being the first to close down the free-running leader, settings things up for a stronger stayer; chased leader, produced to lead 2 out, headed final 1f, no extra.

was back to going with zest on his first outing since leaving Gavin Patrick Cromwell after 12 weeks off, though he now has to build on it; raced clear, jumped boldly, reduced advantage home turn, headed 2 out, held flat.

proved a let-down, made a short price to reverse Windsor form with Vincenzo only to fluff his lines; waited with, shaken up after 3 out, no response; he has form in the mud but the overriding feeling is of a speedy type who'll prove best away from testing ground (much improved on good going final outing over hurdles).

fair over hurdles, ran well below that level sent chasing after 9 months off but was asked a fairly tough question at this level from 4 lb out of the weights; raced off the pace, struggling back straight.

The market spoke of a lack of compelling rivals as much as it did the positives surrounding the favourite, and his blowout opened the door for an old rival to maintain superiority from their recent meeting, the emphasis on stamina brought about by Hypotenus setting a sound pace playing to the winner's strengths.
