ran to a smart level off a mark 8 lb higher, though he had the run of the race and had run already this season, which slightly tempers enthusiasm; made all, travelled well, shaken up over 1f out, finding plenty when left clear inside final 1f; he reportedly returned with a cut, though hopefully that won't prevent his taking his chance in a higher grade with this behind him.

on his toes and warm beforehand, having been gelded since last seen 6 months ago, wasn't seen to best effect, left poorly placed and meeting trouble; held up, not settle fully, shaken up 3f out, messed around a bit by errant rival soon after then hampered when another runner unseated 1f out, not unduly punished and sure to have been third granted a clear run; carried head a bit awkwardly, but form of standout effort at 2 yrs has substance and he's worth another chance.

on handicap debut and up in trip, was in the process of confirming the positive impression created on all-weather last backend, though more likely to have finished a clear second than to have won, when he unshipped his rider, that hopefully a one-off; tracked pace, effort over 2f out, chased leader soon after, around a length down and keeping on when jinked and unseated rider inside final 1f; remains capable of better.

A typically hot-looking renewal of the Esher Cup on paper, though the race set the pattern for the afternoon on the round course, with the winner making all, every other winner on the card either making the running or tracking the leader, that a caveat to what on paper was a smart effort, though he'd have had more of a battle - still likely to have won - had Rifleman not jinked and unseated rider in the final 1f.
