written off by many after an up-and-down campaign, the step back up to 3m seen as something of a last chance, showed he is still capable of high-class form in recording his eighth Grade 1 success, the advantage he gained at the start never relinquished, Penhill briefly threatening turning for home but Faugheen picking up again and still full of running at the line; will be best kept to this trip next season, connections reportedly having not ruled out a novice chase campaign for him.

came up short when attempting to follow up a Cheltenham win at this meeting last year and it was a similar story this time around, again things not panning out ideally for him, unable to get much cover in a field strung out from an early stage, but unlikely to have beaten Faugheen in any case; mid-division, not settle fully, went third 4 out, second 2 out, ridden entering straight, one paced, held when untidy last; has only had the 2 runs this season and is reportedly set to be campaigned on the Flat during the summer.

was in front of Faugheen in the Champion then most impressive on his first try at this trip at Aintree, and is better judged on the latter piece of form for now, this possibly coming too soon after just 12 days off; raced well off the pace, headway when untidy 2 out, kept on, never landed a blow.

back up markedly in trip, shaped a little better than the distance beaten suggests, once again giving the impression that 3m is beyond him, but it is very much a case of back to the drawing board with him; dropped out, some headway 3 out (upsides Bapaume turning for home), effort flattened out.

All 12 ran. Hurdles: 13.

Winning Owner: Mrs S. Ricci

Time: 6m 5.6s Closing Sectional: (4.10f): 60.70s (102.9%)

A strong renewal of this race, the winners of the corresponding events at Cheltenham and Aintree as well as 2 former Champion Hurdlers in the field, and it produced probably the performance of the week, Faugheen rolling back the years in routing the opposition; David Mullins pinched a few lengths at the start and there was no let up in the gallop, those held up never able to land a blow.

FAUGHEEN (IRE) written off by many after an up-and-down campaign, the step back up to 3m seen as something of a last chance, showed he is still capable of high-class form in recording his eighth Grade 1 success, the advantage he gained at the start never relinquished, Penhill briefly threatening turning for home but Faugheen picking up again and still full of running at the line; will be best kept to this trip next season, connections reportedly having not ruled out a novice chase campaign for him.

BAPAUME (FR) back up in trip, ran better than for a while without carrying any sort of win threat; raced well off the pace, merely closed up late.

DIAMOND CAUCHOIS (FR) had something to find in this company, but this wasn't one of his better efforts; mid-division, struggling after 3 out, merely passed beaten horses.

LA BAGUE AU ROI (FR) who'd reportedly had a breathing operation since Cheltenham, fared no better than last time; tracked pace, ridden after 3 out, weakened early in straight.
