The first of the 2 principal trials for the 1000 Guineas threw up more questions than answers, just 3 of the 10 runners - all having their first run since 2023 - entered in the classic, though they included one of the ante-post favourites, she however failed to justify her market position, beaten by one that was consistent but exposed at 2; the form looks below standard for the race, the overall time, the sectionals and the proximity of some exposed runners all pointing that way, the initial view taken possibly even on the high side.

PRETTY CRYSTAL (IRE) was consistent as a 2-y-o, but she'd been beaten on all 4 starts at Group 3 level, so surely showed improved form to land this, well positioned and showing a willing attitude, more professional than the favourite; close up, shaken up 2f out, led well inside final 1f, ran on, proved game; she would need supplementing to take her chance in the Guineas, likely to stay 1m, quite a bit more to find to follow up if she is given the chance in the classic.

DANCE SEQUENCE looked to have a lot going for her, marked down as an exciting prospect when winning the Oh So Sharp here in the autumn, her wandering around that day put down to inexperience, her effort here suggesting there might have been more to it than that, for she really ought to have won this had she knuckled down properly; in touch, shaken up over 2f out, not quicken, headway over 1f out, challenged well inside final 1f, wandered, kept on; she will be suited by 1m and remains with more potential than the winner, time enough to put this defeat right and is perhaps worth trying in headgear.

KATHMANDU (IRE) making turf debut, up in grade, showed much improved form, inexperience catching her out as much as anything after she looked as if she might spring the second surprise win for her yard on the afternoon; raced wide, tracked pace, took keen hold, led on bridle over 2f out, shaken up, edged left, headed well inside final 1f, no extra late on; may do better still.

TRUE CYAN (IRE) had beaten a couple of next-time-out winners when scoring here on debut and had been given a Guineas entry but she hasn't filled out since last year and, still in need of experience, ran scarcely any better than she had on debut; held up, took keen hold, headway 3f out, shaken up 2f out, ran green, not quicken over 1f out; she's still learning and remains with potential.

HERITAGE HOUSE (IRE) in first-time hood, looked exposed as a 2-y-o and ran about as well as could have been expected upped in grade, seeming effective at the slightly longer trip; held up, shaken up over 2f out, short of room over 1f out, plugged on, never on terms.

BORN TO ROCK (IRE) not seen since running below expectations last July on her second start at 2 yrs, looked to have done plenty of work and seemingly fared much better than she had then, looking effective over the 2f longer trip; waited with, effort over 2f out, plugged on, made little impression.

MATRIKA (IRE) had missed the second half of last year after winning a Group 2 at the start of July and ran below form on her return, carrying some condition and perhaps needing the run; led main group nearly 5f, weakened over 1f out; she should stay at least 7f, entered in the Guineas but likely to need her sights aimed at a lower level.

SPIRITUAL (IRE) had shown plenty of potential in 2 runs at 2 yrs, but she was very easy to back on her return, not looking to have grown much, and she failed to match her run here in the Rockfel (when ridden differently), her rider reporting that she became unbalanced; soon steadied, not settle fully, shaken up under 2f out, briefly short of room soon after, made no impression.

GUSHING GOLD (IRE) exposed as a 2-y-o and on the small side, was below form on her first outing since October; in touch, pushed along 3f out, not quicken, weakened over 1f out.

LEXINGTON BELLE (IRE) was below form after 6 months off, failing to take the eye beforehand and still rather unfurnished, her form at 2 yrs suggesting she was flying too high at this level anyway; raced wide, led until over 2f out, wandered, weakened final 1f.
