goes well at both Newmarket venues and, after 5 months off, ran up to best to gain a hard-fought success; mid-field, progress on far rail over 2f out, led last ½f, all out to hold on; arguably shaped only fourth best on the day, though, the next 3 home not seen to maximum effect, and he's already shown his vulnerability off marks in the high 90s, so he'll probably struggle to follow up.

followed the pattern set last year, leaving his reappearance form behind to hit the frame in this contest, a mark of his progress in the last 12 months that he went a lot closer despite a higher mark, and looked unlucky not to win; handy, going well when had to wait for gap under 2f out, had to weave way through entering final 1f, kept on well, just failed; he'll remain shortlist material in races just below the top-end handicaps.

after 5 months off, showed improved form and did well under the circumstances, faring best of the quintet who raced up the stand rail; waited with, pushed along 3f out, carried head bit awkwardly/edged right, especially going into the Dip, but finished well final 1f and just failed; he might be a bit quirky, but he's also been largely progressive to date and there are more races in him this year, either kept to this trip or back over a bit further.

had an air of unfinished business about him at the end of his 3-y-o campaign and, minus the cheekpieces he wore on final 2 starts, shaped with plenty of promise on first outing for 7 months/since being gelded and leaving John & Thady Gosden (sold for 55,000 gns); waited with, shaken up over 2f out, headway when forced to switch over 1f out, kept on well final 1f, edged out near line; there could be more progress in the pipeline and he's one to note for a similar event.

without the tongue strap he wore on final 3-y-o start, ran creditably after 6 months off; raced near side, led group (prominent overall), not settle fully, shaken up under 3f out, hung right from over 1f out, one paced; he's been given a chance by the handicapper and would be of some interest if found a 0-85, or even a 0-80, in the coming weeks.

All 17 ran.

Winning Owner: Mr P. K. Siu

Time: 1m 37.36s Closing Sectional: (3f): 35.5s (102.8%)

Overrounds: Industry SP 126%, Betfair SP 103%

A competitive handicap that produced a blanket finish, the winner arguably seen to better effect than any of the other 3 who were in the photo with him, that trio all likely to be of more interest in the coming weeks; the field split into 2 groups, stalls 13-17 coming up the stand rail and perhaps at a slight disadvantage, behind at most stages in a race run at just an ordinary gallop before the groups merged and things closed up late on.

HAFEET ALAIN (IRE) goes well at both Newmarket venues and, after 5 months off, ran up to best to gain a hard-fought success; mid-field, progress on far rail over 2f out, led last ½f, all out to hold on; arguably shaped only fourth best on the day, though, the next 3 home not seen to maximum effect, and he's already shown his vulnerability off marks in the high 90s, so he'll probably struggle to follow up.
