was the least exposed Flat runner in the field after just 5 previous starts and, faced with an increased emphasis on stamina, showed much improved form to add a big Flat handicap to the ones he's already won over hurdles and fences; held up, travelled smoothly, headway from 5f out, produced to lead under 2f out, responded well; his trainer does things differently to most and he does it extremely effectively.

was racing from the same mark as when sixth in the Ascot Stakes the previous year and ran at least as well, the better gallop in this arguably suiting him better and denied only by an unexposed one in this sphere with a very similar level of ability over Jumps; held up, still plenty to do over 3f out, good progress over 2f out, stayed on well; the stamina he shows on the Flat surely augurs well for him being effective over further than 2m over hurdles.

ran an absolute stormer under a penalty/top weight, this form right up there with his runner-up effort in the 2021 Long Distance Cup (when splitting Trueshan and Stradivarius), picked off only late by a couple of much more patiently-ridden ones from Ireland; close up, led under pressure 3f out, headed under 2f out, battled well.

A much more typical renewal of the Cesarewitch than the one 12 months earlier, the field size and quality back up to more usual metrics, and it produced an easy enough result to assess, the smart jumper The Shunter improving for the stamina test to win his first handicap on the Flat on just his sixth start in this sphere, in the process becoming the fifth Irish-trained winner in the last 6 years.

THE SHUNTER (IRE) was the least exposed Flat runner in the field after just 5 previous starts and, faced with an increased emphasis on stamina, showed much improved form to add a big Flat handicap to the ones he's already won over hurdles and fences; held up, travelled smoothly, headway from 5f out, produced to lead under 2f out, responded well; his trainer does things differently to most and he does it extremely effectively.

PIED PIPER was racing from the same mark as when sixth in the Ascot Stakes the previous year and ran at least as well, the better gallop in this arguably suiting him better and denied only by an unexposed one in this sphere with a very similar level of ability over Jumps; held up, still plenty to do over 3f out, good progress over 2f out, stayed on well; the stamina he shows on the Flat surely augurs well for him being effective over further than 2m over hurdles.

TASHKHAN (IRE) ran an absolute stormer under a penalty/top weight, this form right up there with his runner-up effort in the 2021 Long Distance Cup (when splitting Trueshan and Stradivarius), picked off only late by a couple of much more patiently-ridden ones from Ireland; close up, led under pressure 3f out, headed under 2f out, battled well.

BASHFUL BOY (IRE) was at huge odds having been well held over C&D 3 weeks earlier but ran as well as he has, the increased emphasis on stamina probably suiting given the way he shaped; mid-field, ridden over 4f out, headway under pressure from 2f out, stayed on.

SHEISHYBRID (IRE) ended up acquitting herself well in the end, but it wasn't a display full of zest by any means; raced off the pace, went with little fluency, good headway over 5f out, every chance 2f out, no extra final 1f.

JESSE EVANS (IRE) remains in top form, though if anything he promised even more for a long way over the longest trip he's tackled on the Flat; never far away, travelled fluently, every chance 2f out, no extra entering final 1f.

NOT SO SLEEPY had no easy task under a penalty and went down on his sword for all he failed to make the frame for the first time in the Cesarewitch; held up, steady headway over 4f out, in touch over 2f out, no further impression.

TYPEWRITER (IRE) confirmed her return to form, though it's still the case that the pick of her form is at up to 2m; raced well off the pace, headway under pressure from 4f out, not quicken from 2f out.

GEREMIA (IRE) went a couple of places better than in the Cambridgeshire over half as far a couple of weeks earlier, a very rare runner in both races and hardly failing for stamina here despite the softish ground, hamstrung by an even slower start than usual, however; very slowly away, soon detached, headway under pressure from 3f out, nearest at the finish.

MR ESCOBAR (IRE) in first-time hood, fared best of the Willie Mullins quintet whilst hardly looking straightforward; raced wide, led early, hung left from long way out (ended up against stand rail), not quicken from 3f out.

LOT OF JOY (IRE) was sent off a surprisingly short price given the way she'd been running and continues below form, shaping in a not dissimilar fashion to the Irish version 3 weeks earlier; patiently ridden, steady headway over 4f out, shaken up 3f out, no further impression.

THE GRAND VISIR ran better than last time away from really deep ground, though his days of being a serious contender in the top handicaps are probably behind him, rising 10 after all; mid-field, ridden 4f out, one paced.

TRITONIC shaped better than the distance beaten suggests and, though he handles it, testing ground over extreme trips probably isn't really his bag, not seeing things out on this occasion; mid-field, steady headway from 4f out, threatened over 2f out, weakened approaching final 1f.

OCEAN WIND continues below form, beating more than beat him but never really in the race; dwelt, in rear, headway under pressure from 2f out, never nearer.

ZOFFEE was fourth in this 12 months earlier but again found wanting at the business end after 9 weeks off; in touch, travelled better than most, shaken up over 2f out, promised more than delivered; he's never had a breathing operation but is perhaps due one the way he's been shaping.

GRAND PROVIDENCE was the first 3-y-o representative in the Cesarewitch since stable-companion Coltrane in 2020 and, rather like that one, she didn't do herself full justice on the day, though she was 4 lb out of the weights despite a penalty picked up for winning here 3 weeks earlier, that surely a better guide to her merit than this; held up, ridden over 4f out, chased leaders soon after, faded from 2f out.

ZENON (IRE) was too free; tracked pace, took strong hold, went on long way out, headed 3f out, weakened 2f out.

EMIYN (FR) was below form on his first start at Newmarket, his run style not ideally suited to this track; close up, weakened over 2f out.

WONDERWALL (IRE) again didn't look that straightforward under pressure, acknowledging he had plenty on from a couple of pounds out of the weights; in touch, shaken up over 4f out, carried head bit awkwardly, left behind from 3f out.

BLAZEON FIVE has enjoyed a fine season and she can be excused a below-par effort in such a competitive race at this stage of the year; chased leaders, shaken up 4f out, dropped away over 3f out.

LAND OF WINTER (FR) has been in the doldrums and, rather predictably, failed to make an impact in such a competitive affair; raced off the pace, never a threat.

VINO VICTRIX had been runner-up in this from 2 lb higher 12 months earlier but that was on good ground and he just isn't as effective under testing conditions, this the fourth time in 5 turf starts this season that he's raced on soft or heavy; mid-field, shaken up 5f out, left behind over 3f out.

THE VERY MAN (IRE) didn't run much of a race, plenty of others managing to get much more competitive under similar rides; held up, ridden over 3f out, never a threat.

JACKFINBAR (FR) wasn't in the same form as last time; mid-field, shaken up over 3f out, made no impression.

WORDSWORTH (IRE) didn't run much of a race back on the Flat; chased leaders, lost place long way out.

GOSHEN (FR) was strong in the betting back on the Flat after 6 months off but has never really convinced as an out-and-out stayer in this sphere; mid-field, ridden over 5f out, weakened over 3f out.

GOLDEN SHOT was too free after 8 weeks off; mid-field, took strong hold, ridden over 5f out, weakened over 3f out; he should stay beyond 2m and still hasn't many miles on the clock for a 4-y-o, still with an air of unfinished business about him with next season in mind.

TEMPORIZE had presumably been kept fresh for this, off 10 weeks since Goodwood, but lost both front shoes and that presumably impacted his performance; mid-field, struggling long way out.

MOTAZZEN (IRE) under a penalty, turned in a rare poor effort; tracked pace, dropped away over 4f out.

M C MULDOON (IRE) has run badly on both starts since his return from a long absence; held up, shaken up over 5f out, no response.

LAW OF THE SEA has been prone to more than just the odd stinker in recent starts; raced off the pace, beaten over 5f out, eased.
