had been turned over at 1/4 on his most recent start over hurdles and his Flat profile rather implied that he'd peaked in terms of form, but he found further improvement from somewhere to give his yard back-to-back winners of the Cesarewitch, finding much more for pressure than has sometimes been the case in this sphere over the last year or so; mid-division, steady headway 4f out, pushed along over 3f out, led under pressure approaching final 1f, dug deep under pressure.

produced a career best in form terms whilst not convincing that he wanted it so much under pressure as the first and third, probably no coincidence that he's traded notably short in-running on 4 of his last 5 starts in this sphere yet hasn't finished the job, a career record of just one win a poor return for a horse as talented as he; held up, smooth progress from 5f out, every chance from 2f out, stayed on.

under a penalty, produced a career best upped to this sort of trip for the first time, faring comfortably best of the 3-y-o representatives; never far away, edged ahead 2f out, headed approaching final 1f, ran on; there'll be plenty of opportunties for him next season, too, especially now we know he's such a thorough stayer.

had raced only up to 14f previously and fared surprisingly well over this much longer trip considering how hard he pulled, pretty much everything else that took a grip ending up well beaten; tracked pace, refused to settle, went on over 4f out, headed 2f out, one paced; we know enough about him not be getting carried away with the performance, however.

wasn't disgraced after 10 weeks off back on the Flat but, having won over as far as 3m over hurdles, seemed to find even this barely enough of a test, at least ridden as he was following a sluggish start; slowly into stride, in rear, ridden over 5f out, came wide, laboured headway from 3f out, never nearer.

Non Runners: CARNWENNAN (IRE). Race Distance Adjustment: +13 yds

Winning Owner: Anthony Bloom

More testing conditions than usual made for an even greater test of stamina than normal and plenty failed to cope, including a number of those that were prominent in the betting, none of the 5 that were sent off at single-figure odds managing to see things out, the first 4 home having an average SP of almost 27/1; the first 3 surely all recorded career bests in managing to pull so far clear of the rest but, all the same, the feeling is that their form is best treated with a degree of conservatism given the nature of the race.

STRATUM had been turned over at 1/4 on his most recent start over hurdles and his Flat profile rather implied that he'd peaked in terms of form, but he found further improvement from somewhere to give his yard back-to-back winners of the Cesarewitch, finding much more for pressure than has sometimes been the case in this sphere over the last year or so; mid-division, steady headway 4f out, pushed along over 3f out, led under pressure approaching final 1f, dug deep under pressure.

PARTY PLAYBOY (GER) produced a career best in form terms whilst not convincing that he wanted it so much under pressure as the first and third, probably no coincidence that he's traded notably short in-running on 4 of his last 5 starts in this sphere yet hasn't finished the job, a career record of just one win a poor return for a horse as talented as he; held up, smooth progress from 5f out, every chance from 2f out, stayed on.

SUMMER MOON under a penalty, produced a career best upped to this sort of trip for the first time, faring comfortably best of the 3-y-o representatives; never far away, edged ahead 2f out, headed approaching final 1f, ran on; there'll be plenty of opportunties for him next season, too, especially now we know he's such a thorough stayer.

NOT SO SLEEPY had raced only up to 14f previously and fared surprisingly well over this much longer trip considering how hard he pulled, pretty much everything else that took a grip ending up well beaten; tracked pace, refused to settle, went on over 4f out, headed 2f out, one paced; we know enough about him not be getting carried away with the performance, however.

MR EVEREST (IRE) strong in the betting, was stretched by the test, shaping better than the bare result, and will benefit from a return to around 2m; held up, steady headway from 5f out, chased leaders over 3f out, not sustain effort.

GREAT TRANGO (IRE) wasn't disgraced after 10 weeks off back on the Flat but, having won over as far as 3m over hurdles, seemed to find even this barely enough of a test, at least ridden as he was following a sluggish start; slowly into stride, in rear, ridden over 5f out, came wide, laboured headway from 3f out, never nearer.

WHO DARES WINS (IRE) was possibly feeling the effects of his run in France just 7 days earlier, trying hard as usual but lacking zip; held up, laboured progress over 3f out, plugged on; his BHA mark is due to rise to 109 on the back of his run in the Cadran.

SNEAKY GETAWAY (IRE) has been harshly dealt with by the handicapper and wasn't far below his best despite being beaten more than 13 lengths, certainly still in good heart, however; held up, travelled better than most, headway 4f out, shaken up over 3f out, no extra final 1f.

DUBAWI FIFTY was in a first-time visor and never threatened to better his fourth in this a few years back, his season having gone the wrong way since the Northumberland Plate; patiently ridden, headway under pressure over 3f out, never on terms.

GREAT WHITE SHARK (FR) was strong in the betting back on the Flat but, whilst beating far more than beat her, there was unquestionably a laboured element to her display, never threatening to reach a challenging position; held up, ridden over 4f out, plodded on.

BUILDMEUPBUTTERCUP was racing from the same mark as at Leopardstown and had proved herself over 2½m when runner-up in the Ascot Stakes earlier in the year so it was disappointing she didn't find more for pressure, certainly promising more than she delivered (went as low as 3.25 in-running); dwelt, dropped out, typically travelled well, steady headway over 4f out, chased leaders over 3f out, weakened approaching final 1f.

NUITS ST GEORGES (IRE) continues in good heart for all he was beaten a long way in the end, not the thorough stayer that plenty of these are; chased leaders, left behind from 3f out.

DARKSIDEOFTARNSIDE (IRE) possibly found the race coming too soon just 8 days on from a tough race in the mud at Ascot, but he did shape as if still in good form, however; mid-field, headway over 5f out, challenged over 4f out, dropped away from 3f out.

CYPRESS CREEK (IRE) was racing in a handicap for the first time and again failed to make an impact, his 4-y-o campaign pretty much a write-off; dropped out, never dangerous.

RANCH HAND well backed, failed to meet expectations, a bit too keen to last out trying an extreme distance for the first time, but he'd shaped at Haydock as though longer trips would suit and he's very much the type to do well next season, still just 6 races into his career after all; tracked pace, not settle fully, shaken up over 4f out, weakened from 3f out.

GRACEFUL LADY didn't run so poorly as the distance beaten might suggest; dropped out, ridden over 5f out, headway under pressure soon after, not sustain effort.

EDDYSTONE ROCK (IRE) was well held after 7 weeks off, probably not enough of a stayer for this sort of test but hardly going as if in the same sort of form as his previous 2 starts, either; mid-field, shaken up over 5f out, weakened over 3f out.

HERMOSO MUNDO (SAF) doesn't convince as an out-and-out stayer; held up, took strong hold, headway under pressure 4f out, not sustain effort.

ROCHESTER HOUSE (IRE) shaped as if amiss, though he'd been too keen to prove effective at the trip, anyway; handy, took strong hold, lost place quickly 5f out, eased off with rider looking down.

THEMAXWECAN (IRE) under a penalty, underperformed, his recent success having come in much smaller fields; mid-field, ridden over 5f out, beaten 4f out.

RAINBOW DREAMER was well held, unlikely that he's well enough treated for top-end handicaps such as this; patiently ridden, headway over 5f out, dropped away 3f out.

SEINESATIONAL was typically awkward off the bridle; chased leaders, took strong hold, ridden over 5f out, carried head awkwardly, dropped away gradually.

COEUR BLIMEY (IRE) had underfoot conditions more in his favour than at Royal Ascot but was again well held after another 4 months off, forcing tactics very hard to pull off in this particular race; made running, headed over 4f out, weakened under 3f out.

COEUR DE LION after 12 weeks off, turned in a rare poor effort (didn't run very well in the race 12 months earlier, either); mid-field, struggling over 4f out, eased off.

TIME TO STUDY (FR) back up markedly in trip, found run of good form coming to a halt; mid-field, ridden 4f out, weakened from 3f out.

SOVEREIGN DUKE (GER) ran poorly after another 11 weeks off, tiring too far from home to be making stamina assessments on this performance; mid-field, weakened under 4f out.

LAND OF OZ had proved his stamina for the trip when winning here 3 weeks earlier but was simply too free this time; dropped out, took strong hold, rapid progress soon after halfway, weakened over 4f out, eased off; he's had a cracking season and appeals as the sort to go on again at 4 yrs, racing under a penalty here but by no means certain to be handicapped out of things when he returns in 2020.

TIMOSHENKO ran miserably 10 weeks on from Goodwood, connections quick to blame the more testing ground (raced solely on good or firmer in handicaps previously), though it seems likely that more severe headgear will be tried sooner rather than later; mid-field, off the bridle long way out, beaten over 4f out, eased off.

GARBANZO (IRE) was beaten by more than lack of stamina trying an extreme distance for the first time, in trouble a long way out; in touch, ridden over 5f out, dropped away soon after, eased.

BILLY RAY ran no sort of race in first-time visor (had also undergone breathing op since last seen); raced well off the pace, beaten over 4f out.
