after 8 weeks off, was well backed and ran his best race yet, dropped back to sprint distances for the first time since finishing second in the Commonwealth Cup last summer, a clear-cut victor and almost certain to have prevailed even if those that met trouble had had a clear passage; handy, travelled well, led under 2f out, in command soon after, hung right final 1f, kept on well; was reported afterwards as likely to run next in the Sussex Stakes, though that now seems off the agenda, and a programme at this trip seems more likely, the one to beat on this showing in races like the Sprint Cup, ground permitting.

ran to just a similar level as at Ascot, taking on her elders for the first time, no excuses on the day, though given how good she was at Haydock 2 starts back, she may well be seen to better advantage back there in the Sprint Cup, connections having nominated that race rather than this as her target immediately after her Ascot win; chased leaders, effort over 2f out, every chance soon after, not quicken, kept on inside final 1f.

back down markedly in trip and back on firmer going, never threatened after 7 weeks off, but it's easy to put a line through this run and he went as if he retains a fair bit more ability than his 2 previous runs this year suggested; held up, travelled well, not clear run from 2f out, not given at all a hard time; his entries suggest he's going to be campaigned at up to 7f from now on, and the Lennox Stakes might be a suitable option to help him get back on track.

All 18 ran.

Winning Owner: Mr Paul G. Jacobs

Time: 1m 9.97s Closing Sectional: (3.00f): 34.60s (101.1%)

A fascinating running of the July Cup in anticipation, with all the main sprint form lines from Royal Ascot drawn together, along with those of several who had shown their best at 7f and 1m, the field very closely matched in terms of form, but one of the latter group, Limato, coming out a decisive victor, his performance as good as any in this race this century, at least on a par with such as Sakhee's Secret and Oasis Dream; Limato could well dominate the sprint division for the rest of the season, though the race wasn't entirely satisfactory and too many failed to run to their best, quite a few meeting trouble in running, those that raced on the stand-side flank or who were held up seeming at a disadvantage too.

LIMATO (IRE) after 8 weeks off, was well backed and ran his best race yet, dropped back to sprint distances for the first time since finishing second in the Commonwealth Cup last summer, a clear-cut victor and almost certain to have prevailed even if those that met trouble had had a clear passage; handy, travelled well, led under 2f out, in command soon after, hung right final 1f, kept on well; was reported afterwards as likely to run next in the Sussex Stakes, though that now seems off the agenda, and a programme at this trip seems more likely, the one to beat on this showing in races like the Sprint Cup, ground permitting.

SUEDOIS (FR) is thriving on racing for his new yard and ran his best race yet, albeit seen to maximum advantage the way things unfolded; prominent, travelled well, every chance after 2f out, not quicken, kept on inside final 1f.

QUIET REFLECTION ran to just a similar level as at Ascot, taking on her elders for the first time, no excuses on the day, though given how good she was at Haydock 2 starts back, she may well be seen to better advantage back there in the Sprint Cup, connections having nominated that race rather than this as her target immediately after her Ascot win; chased leaders, effort over 2f out, every chance soon after, not quicken, kept on inside final 1f.

PROFITABLE (IRE) ran respectably, perhaps not so effective at 6f as he is at 5f, this his first run at the trip since finishing fifth last year's Commonwealth Cup (when Limato was second); mid-division, effort 2f out, not quicken final 1f.

WASHINGTON DC (IRE) ran to a similar level to last time, confirming himself a smart sprinter, though he was seen to good effect and it's hard to think he's much better than this; waited with, effort over 2f out, slightly hampered soon after, kept on inside final 1f.

SOLE POWER had missed the King's Stand due to soft ground and, returning from 10 weeks off, shaped better than the bare result back at 6f; held up, travelled well, not clear run over 1f out, kept on inside final 1f.

DANZENO wasn't disgraced, as when fifth in last year's renewal not helped either by being held up or by racing on the near flank; held up, effort over 2f out, kept on final 1f, made little impression.

GOKEN (FR) back up in trip, shaped better than the bare result, likely to have gone close to confirming his Ascot form with a clear run, the more patient tactics on his last 2 starts looking to suit; held up and switched to centre, travelled well, still going smoothly when not clear run from 2f out, kept on inside final 1f.

MONGOLIAN SATURDAY (USA) wasn't disgraced, bettering his Royal Ascot effort back on firmer going, possibly just not so good as he was last year; led after 1f, headed under 2f out, faded.

AIR FORCE BLUE (USA) back down markedly in trip and back on firmer going, never threatened after 7 weeks off, but it's easy to put a line through this run and he went as if he retains a fair bit more ability than his 2 previous runs this year suggested; held up, travelled well, not clear run from 2f out, not given at all a hard time; his entries suggest he's going to be campaigned at up to 7f from now on, and the Lennox Stakes might be a suitable option to help him get back on track.

COTAI GLORY back up in trip, wouldn't be sure to be as effective at 6f as at 5f, but he just wasn't in the same form as last time, beaten well before stamina came into play; chased leaders, labouring over 2f out.

TWILIGHT SON was one of the disappointments of the race, back on firmer ground and possibly just not so effective on it as he is on good/good to soft, not ideally positioned on the near-side flank either; held up, effort 2f out, made little impression.
