had been laid out for this and, unlike last year, he came with a good preparation after a close-second in the trial 3 weeks ago and was handed an ideal draw, everything in place for him to produce a career best on the Flat and land this valuable prize, emulating the same connections' Detroit City who won it in 2006; stall 2 made it easy to get a handy position from the outset, he was ridden to keep touch 3f out and then came strongly as stamina mattered most on the uphill climb to the line, finding plenty to lead towards the finish; he'll presumably be back over hurdles next and retaining the headgear in that sphere might draw something more out of him.

has had an excellent year, full of personal bests, and this was another as he went close to adding a second valuable handicap to his record after the Old Newton Cup in the summer, the 2f longer trip than he'd tried before not a problem; waited with, travelled smoothly, steady headway from 4f out, chased leaders 2f out, challenged inside final 1f, kept on; he's extremely versatile, with regards trip and ground conditions, and will continue to run well, worth trying again in listed company.

was a strong favourite after an impressive big-field win at Galway when last seen 10 weeks ago and, though not justifying the support, he ran a big race from 9 lb higher in the weights and still shaped like a well-handicapped horse, running too well to suggest he didn't stay the trip but beaten by a couple who relished it more than him; tracked pace, tanked along (a bit keen early), loomed up around 2f out, edged ahead entering final 1f, headed late on, no extra; he remains lightly raced over hurdles and is a handicapper to follow back in that sphere over the coming months.

has been holding his own in Group races of late and proved better than ever to hit the frame from a high mark in this strong renewal of the Cesarewitch, probably worth a little extra credit too as he was drawn high and made his move down the centre of the track, unlike the 3 that beat him; mid-field, smooth headway out wide from 3f out, challenged approaching final 1f, one paced; he's proven reliable all year.

had found it touch in competitive Flat handicaps previously but showed improved form to make presence felt here; slowly into stride, raced off the pace, headway over 4f out, close up 2f out, kept on; hasn't run over hurdles since winning a maiden in 2012 but no surprise to see him back in that sphere this winter.

would probably have had an even better chance if conditions hadn't dried out, mindful of his record on ground softer than good, but he ran a big race anyway, shaping well, his effort just made earlier than ideal, which was telling in the end; broke well from a high draw and was soon prominent, led over 2f out, headed entering final 1f, one paced; still very lightly raced for one rising 5 and it's not out of the question that he's up to competing in some of the pattern races for stayers next season.

thrived in weaker races on the all-weather last winter but isn't yet proven on turf and was well held on return from 6 months off; led until over 3f out, weakening when short of room, eased off.

All 33 ran. Race Distance Adjustment: +18 yds

Winning Owner: Mr Terry Warner

Time: 3m 49.1s

There have been a few shock winners of the Cesarewitch in recent years but that wasn't the case this time around and it appeals as a strong piece of handicap form, the likes of Big Easy and Quick Jack coming to the fore having been laid out for the race, whilst De Rigueur and Brass Ring are reliable sorts who have had good seasons; in a soundly-run race tactics weren't a major factor, although coming from right out the back in such a big field was never going to be easy.

BIG EASY (GER) had been laid out for this and, unlike last year, he came with a good preparation after a close-second in the trial 3 weeks ago and was handed an ideal draw, everything in place for him to produce a career best on the Flat and land this valuable prize, emulating the same connections' Detroit City who won it in 2006; stall 2 made it easy to get a handy position from the outset, he was ridden to keep touch 3f out and then came strongly as stamina mattered most on the uphill climb to the line, finding plenty to lead towards the finish; he'll presumably be back over hurdles next and retaining the headgear in that sphere might draw something more out of him.

DE RIGUEUR has had an excellent year, full of personal bests, and this was another as he went close to adding a second valuable handicap to his record after the Old Newton Cup in the summer, the 2f longer trip than he'd tried before not a problem; waited with, travelled smoothly, steady headway from 4f out, chased leaders 2f out, challenged inside final 1f, kept on; he's extremely versatile, with regards trip and ground conditions, and will continue to run well, worth trying again in listed company.

QUICK JACK (IRE) was a strong favourite after an impressive big-field win at Galway when last seen 10 weeks ago and, though not justifying the support, he ran a big race from 9 lb higher in the weights and still shaped like a well-handicapped horse, running too well to suggest he didn't stay the trip but beaten by a couple who relished it more than him; tracked pace, tanked along (a bit keen early), loomed up around 2f out, edged ahead entering final 1f, headed late on, no extra; he remains lightly raced over hurdles and is a handicapper to follow back in that sphere over the coming months.

BRASS RING has been holding his own in Group races of late and proved better than ever to hit the frame from a high mark in this strong renewal of the Cesarewitch, probably worth a little extra credit too as he was drawn high and made his move down the centre of the track, unlike the 3 that beat him; mid-field, smooth headway out wide from 3f out, challenged approaching final 1f, one paced; he's proven reliable all year.

DIGEANTA (IRE) had found it touch in competitive Flat handicaps previously but showed improved form to make presence felt here; slowly into stride, raced off the pace, headway over 4f out, close up 2f out, kept on; hasn't run over hurdles since winning a maiden in 2012 but no surprise to see him back in that sphere this winter.

NEARLY CAUGHT (IRE) would probably have had an even better chance if conditions hadn't dried out, mindful of his record on ground softer than good, but he ran a big race anyway, shaping well, his effort just made earlier than ideal, which was telling in the end; broke well from a high draw and was soon prominent, led over 2f out, headed entering final 1f, one paced; still very lightly raced for one rising 5 and it's not out of the question that he's up to competing in some of the pattern races for stayers next season.

TEAK (IRE) was in much deeper than previously but is at the top of his game and continues in good heart, worth rating at least a length or so closer given he was hampered in the closing stages; mid-division, travelled better than most, challenged 3f out, held when hampered entering final 1f, no extra.

VILLA ROYALE did really well when first joining this stable earlier in the year, probably in the grip of the handicapper now, but ran creditably after 4 months off; chased leaders, pushed along 4f out, plugged on, no match for principals.

COMMUNICATOR rarely runs a bad race and this was a respectable run, but even though he has a few good placed efforts his vulnerability in these top staying handicaps is exposed, without a win in well over 2 years now; mid-division, effort over 2f out, kept on

JONNY DELTA shaped as if still in good form, his effort not too dissimilar to when seventh in the corresponding race 12 months ago; mid-field, ridden 3f out, stuck to task without really threatening.

SOHAR ran respectably and deserves some extra credit considering she had the worst of the draw, racing well off the pace early, making headway under pressure 3f out and keeping on as best she could.

RAY WARD (IRE) was closely matched with Big Easy on trial run 3 weeks ago and again shaped as if still in good form, not seen to best effect; had a difficult draw as it went, patiently ridden, headway 4f out, plugged on, not ideally placed.

TED SPREAD wasn't totally disgraced in such a competitive affair after 5 months off, no longer the smart Flat performer he used to be; in touch, effort 3f out, left behind 2f out.

SULA TWO ran better than on previous couple of starts but still operating some way below best; in touch, driven over 4f out, one paced.

GROOVEJET was officially 5 lb well in after second in a Group 2 last time, so it wasn't surprising that she was backed at big prices, but seemed stretched by the 3f longer trip; mid-field, chased leaders 2f out, no extra inside final 1f, her effort flattening out; she should stay 2m if tried.

GABRIAL'S KING (IRE) again ran below form but the trip wasn't the obvious problem, more the competitiveness of the race; held up, progress 3f out, plugged on, never a threat.

VERY GOOD DAY (FR) isn't the force of old having stood little racing over last 2 years but at least showed that he's not a lost cause if the handicapper gives him a chance; chased leaders, driven over 3f out, weakened over 1f out.

MOIDORE is best excused this run, done with after getting messed about, and although he has form on firmish ground softer conditions are probably ideal; tracked pace, ridden when short of room around 3f out, faded.

RHOMBUS (IRE) faced a totally different scenario for 2 small-field wins recently and had winning run ended, though not seen to best effect; dropped out from worst of draw, some headway 3f out, one paced, never on terms but wasn't well placed.

LADY KASHAAN (IRE) ran one of lesser races, has little in hand of her present mark and struggles in the more competitive handicaps; mid-division, labouring badly 3f out, soon beaten.

GABRIAL'S STAR was well held, essentially found this too competitive; raced off the pace, weakened 3f out, never a threat.

ARGENT KNIGHT was backed at long odds, claimer ridden for the first time to ease his burden, but ran below form, pushed along 3f out but never landing a blow.

SWNYMOR (IRE) had been off 10 weeks since Galway and failed to build on promise of that last run, a bit too free trying this 2f longer trip and not getting home; mid-division, not settle fully, weakened over 1f out.

MUBARAZA (IRE) is struggling for form since returning from 5 months off; raced off the pace, always behind.

SADDLER'S ROCK (IRE) offered little on first outing since leaving John M. Oxx after 4 months off (never on terms), continues out of sorts, disappointing all season, though is presumably set to go hurdling which could spark him into life again.

SIR FRANK MORGAN (IRE) ran one of poorer races of what has been an extremely busy this season; mid-division, effort over 3f out, dropped away over 2f out.

WATERCLOCK (IRE) hasn't been the same horse for Jedd O'Keefe this year as he was when second in this race (from 6 lb higher) for Roger Charlton 12 months ago; prominent, ridden 3f out, folded, soon beaten.

NOBLE SILK produced a rare below-par effort, easy enough to forgive in a race like this; mid-division, lost place after 3f out, no further impression; type to bounce back quickly.

EARTH AMBER after 9 weeks off, shaped as if she might have been amiss, finding little having briefly threatened; in touch, chased leaders 3f out, folded 2f out, eased off.

DEBDEBDEB in first-time hood, again ran below form; soon behind, off the bridle long way out, made no impression.

MR BURBIDGE thrived in weaker races on the all-weather last winter but isn't yet proven on turf and was well held on return from 6 months off; led until over 3f out, weakening when short of room, eased off.

SUEGIOO (FR) has done well in similar events this season, including a win in the Chester Cup, and although well held he's best judged on previous form; mid-division, ridden when hampered around 3f out, weakened, eased off.

SPICE FAIR ran no sort of race; dwelt, hung left over 2f out, always behind.
