improved further to make a successful start in handicaps after 8 months off, doing well under the circumstances, and is one to keep on the right side, value for a fair bit more than the winning margin; held up, smooth headway over 2f out, quickened to lead well inside final 1f, comfortably; there's a good chance he'll develop into something better than a handicapper as the season progresses, this trip unlikely to be the limit of his stamina, either.

gelded since last seen and without the headgear this time, looked more straightforward as he progressed again after 6 months off, surely capable of winning a handicap or 2 this season if his temperament holds; mid-field, travelled fluently, steady headway over 2f out, edged ahead approaching final 1f, headed final 100 yds, stayed on.

ran up to best on first outing since leaving David O'Meara after 8 months off, his new stable having seemingly got them well forward after the enforced absence; prominent, went on early in straight, headed approaching final 1f, kept on; he was successful from this mark at York last summer and won't always come up against a pair as well handicapped as the 2 that beat him here.

All 12 ran.

Winning Owner: Orchard Bloodstock Ltd

Time: 2m 44.85s Closing Sectional: (3.00f): 37.36s (106.3%)

A useful handicap and an interesting one, too; plenty failed to show their form on the day and there was an ugly incident 2f out, in which December Sound was fatally injured, but there's no question the first 2 were ahead of their marks and the winner, in particular, strikes as one to keep on the right side, comfortably on top at the line despite not being well positioned entering the straight, the pace having steadied quite noticeably after halfway.

ALIGNAK improved further to make a successful start in handicaps after 8 months off, doing well under the circumstances, and is one to keep on the right side, value for a fair bit more than the winning margin; held up, smooth headway over 2f out, quickened to lead well inside final 1f, comfortably; there's a good chance he'll develop into something better than a handicapper as the season progresses, this trip unlikely to be the limit of his stamina, either.
