did more than capitalise on a falling mark, proving at least as good as ever granted a first try at a marathon trip, by no means the first boost to the form of this season's Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby (Wakanda also came from that race); patiently ridden, jumped more fluently than usual, smooth headway from 5 out, produced to lead with bold leap last, forged clear, surprisingly fresh as he passed the line; he'll presumably have Ayr on the agenda but conditions won't be so testing there in the spring.

sensibly given 8 weeks off since Haydock, ran every bit as well - and probably better - than he had there, evidently primed following his short break, once more posting an effort that would have seen him win without the presence of a lively one, in this case a rival unexposed over extreme distances; mid-field, smooth headway back straight, produced to lead between 3 out and 2 out, headed last, kept on, no match for winner, pulled clear of remainder.

All 17 ran. Fences: 25. Race Distance Adjustment: +30 yds

Winning Owner: David & Nicky Robinson

Time: 8m 58.8s Closing Sectional: (2.25f): 37.20s (100.1%)

Companero's success in a 3-finisher affair in 2011 stands alone when it comes to severe tests but this still predictably wound up an attritional affair in its own right thanks to the pressure on stamina and jumping, only 6 completing the course and 2 of those well clear of the remainder by the end, both some way ahead of their marks to surge away as they did for all conditions exaggerated the margins involved; there was little let-up in the pace forced by Milansbar, many struggling a circuit out.

BAYWING (IRE) did more than capitalise on a falling mark, proving at least as good as ever granted a first try at a marathon trip, by no means the first boost to the form of this season's Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby (Wakanda also came from that race); patiently ridden, jumped more fluently than usual, smooth headway from 5 out, produced to lead with bold leap last, forged clear, surprisingly fresh as he passed the line; he'll presumably have Ayr on the agenda but conditions won't be so testing there in the spring.
