perhaps achieved even more than it had appeared in splitting Epatante and Soaring Glory (4 lb better off with that rival here) at Kempton but has been finding improvement here and there pretty much all season, taking his record in handicap hurdles this campaign to 3-6 as he added a Betfair Hurdle to go with the Welsh Champion, underlining how well suited he is to the demands of such races as he cruised into contention out wide entering the straight and did just enough to hold off the closing novice in second, having taken himself to the front (soon after 3 out) further from home than might have seemed ideal.
held up, smooth headway wide entering straight, produced to lead soon after 3 out, kicked on from next, awkward last, held on gamely

failed by only one to emulate other novices from this stable (Splash of Ginge, Ballyandy and Al Dancer) by winning this valuable race, like the first 2 of those stepping into a handicap for the first time and improving for the different test, shaping really well into the bargain; handy, ridden more towards inner than Glory And Fortune 2 out, effort last, kept going well to line but just ran out of ground; he's well on his way to proving a smart hurdler and is one to keep on the right side, especially beyond 2m.

progressed again to upstage stablemate Broomfield Burg and fill the places in a much deeper handicap from 9 lb higher, showing a different side to his game as he did at least as much off the bridle as on it, still only fifth crossing the last; mid-division, headway when shaken up early in straight, not quicken 2 out, rallied; he's already won at 21f this season.

ran vastly better than he had in First Street's Kempton race, doing well to pass as many as he did having been anchored in rear; steadied at the start, raced well off the pace, behind still 3 out, still plenty to do on inner (winner on other side of track) last, kept on well run-in, went fourth late on; he's overdue a crack at 2½m and can try it in much lesser handicaps than this from his mark (1 lb out of weights here).

underlined just how well suited he is by a big-field handicap, his finishing effort blunted by errors as much as the stone higher mark than when landing the race as a novice, cheekpieces not the issue they'd seemed in a messy Supreme given a second try; mid-division, shuffled back briefly home turn, effort when mistakes last 2, no extra only late on.

had to settle for a mid-field finish but wasn't at all disgraced given some of the things against him, faced with a more competitive environment than before and surely more of a stayer, his yard nothing like so prolific as it had been when he was last seen in the Kennel Gate (finished ahead of I Like To Move It that day) pre-Christmas, either; off pace out wide, pushed along entering straight, not quicken 2 out, rallied run-in, needs the emphasis more on stamina; he remains a smart prospect.

didn't have the chance the market suggested (possibly priced up on record of his owner in this race more than profile) and failed to justify his status as favourite, his apparent lack of battling qualities exposed in a handicap that asked more of him than his previous one; mid-division, typically took strong hold, took closer order home turn, chased leader 2 out, third when awkward last, faltered; it would be no surprise to see a hood refitted soon.

Perhaps fitting in the current climate of British field-size discussion that even the most valuable handicap in the calendar would attract its lowest turnout for an edition hosted at this track - Ascot staged the 2019 renewal - since 14 also went to post in 1998, yet there wasn't much of a drop-off in quality for all this wasn't one of those renewals with an obvious future graded-race regular lurking among them, I Like To Move It doing his bit to enhance the fine record of novices in the race only to be thwarted by a more established rival with a wealth of good-class handicap experience whose own record is one of ongoing improvement; Jetoile ensured a good gallop, which helped Glory And Fortune become the first horse with a Timeform EPF higher than 3 to land this prize since Zarkandar in 2012.

GLORY AND FORTUNE (IRE) perhaps achieved even more than it had appeared in splitting Epatante and Soaring Glory (4 lb better off with that rival here) at Kempton but has been finding improvement here and there pretty much all season, taking his record in handicap hurdles this campaign to 3-6 as he added a Betfair Hurdle to go with the Welsh Champion, underlining how well suited he is to the demands of such races as he cruised into contention out wide entering the straight and did just enough to hold off the closing novice in second, having taken himself to the front (soon after 3 out) further from home than might have seemed ideal.
