had an excuse last time (reported afterwards to have thumps) and was back to his very best after 6 months off; chased leader, upsides 3 out, led when not fluent 2 out, shaken up run-in, kept going well; he didn't convince with his jumping in 2 starts over fences.

who'd had a breathing operation, shaped encouragingly with headgear left off after 7 months off but would have benefited from a stronger gallop; held up, still plenty to do 3 out, not fluent 2 out, stayed on, never landed a blow; he hasn't won a race since 2018 but retains most of his ability and, on a fair mark nowadays, should be thereabouts wherever he goes next.

needs softer ground (also went without tongue tie) but will probably be back down to the mark he scored from at Kelso in March after this and showed enough to suggest he'll be worth a second look when conditions are more in his favour; held up, outpaced before 3 out, held when awkward last.

A useful handicap in which a couple of 8-y-os ran up to their best to pull clear of a younger rival who had been improving, while the fourth shaped well on his return; the pace didn't pick up until the end of the back straight, so it wasn't a thorough test.
