produced an effort right out of the top drawer again, a class better than a representative field of milers after leading plenty soon enough, hard to see what might trouble him at this trip, though his entries suggest he'll be tried over further at some stage, in the International at York if not before; waited with, travelled strongly, smooth headway 3f out, quickened to lead 2f out, ridden over 1f out, kept on, had bit in hand; bred to stay 1¼m; will continue to take all the beating.

seemed to excel herself, taking on males at pattern level for the first time, a lot to like about her effort, even though outclassed by the winner; held up, good headway over 2f out, chased leader approaching final 1f, stuck to task, made little impression; the Duke of Cambridge would be the obvious next step, though there are plenty of opportunitites for fillies and mares at this level over 1m through the summer.

ran about as well as could have been expected upped in grade, looking at home at this level for a long way, further good races likely to come his way, kept away from the winner; waited with, travelled well, headway over 2f out, chased leader briefly, not quicken inside final 1f.

was, strictly speaking, below form, but he shaped encouragingly with another attempt at the Queen Anne in mind, the prospect of reaching a place definitely there, even if Palace Pier would be in a different league; in rear, still plenty to do 3f out, kept on well approaching final 1f, took fourth close home.

was beaten exactly the same distance by Palace Pier as he had been at Sandown, running to a similar level as well, again signs that he'll benefit from a return to shorter, the Diamond Jubilee an option next; prominent, took keen hold, shaken up over 2f out, not quicken.

was, along with My Oberon, less exposed than the rest, this just his fifth start, and though he wasn't up to the task, taking on much better company than previously, there was encouragement in his performance, particularly given he looked to be carrying condition after 9 months off and he was typically keener than ideal; led, raced freely, headed 2f out, ridden, one paced; may yet make an impact at pattern level.

was one of the least exposed in the field and looked worth a try in this grade, but he failed to show his form, only briefly looked as if he could get into the shake up; in touch, effort over 2f out, no extra inside final 1f, never on terms; he's still lightly raced and may yet resume on an upward curve.

provided the only opposition in the market to the favourite, and ought to have been competitive for a place, but he disappointed, going backwards from his reappearance, back up in grade; held up, still plenty to do over 2f out, ridden, no extra, not persevered with once held.

The Lockinge, back in its familiar place as the first Group 1 for older horses in the British calendar - the race the most significant of those not rescheduled after the resumption in 2020 - had a lop-sided look to it, many of the field well established as just a bit short of this sort of level, Palace Pier operating at a higher one, 10 lb in hand beforehand on Timeform ratings, his performance every bit as dominant as that might suggest, most well beaten off, with the second favourite running poorly, the runner-up seeming to excel herself, some grounds for being a little cautious about the form, though the winner is likely to take all the beating in the best races at 1m and perhaps a bit further this summer; the pace was fair, the field ending up well towards the stand side, with the winner making his move closest to the rail, a position favoured the previous day.

PALACE PIER produced an effort right out of the top drawer again, a class better than a representative field of milers after leading plenty soon enough, hard to see what might trouble him at this trip, though his entries suggest he'll be tried over further at some stage, in the International at York if not before; waited with, travelled strongly, smooth headway 3f out, quickened to lead 2f out, ridden over 1f out, kept on, had bit in hand; bred to stay 1¼m; will continue to take all the beating.
