boasts a remarkable record to have won 6 of his 7 handicaps, impressive that he immediately rebounded from the one blot on his copybook, another increase in trip making a difference to him, excusably taking a while in overhauling a pair who are themselves better than ever right now but making it look cosy at the very end, suggesting he hasn't peaked just yet.
mid-field, effort over 2f out, kept on well, edged ahead final 100 yds

slightly unfortunate not to get more out of his onward march up the ratings, only bit-by-bit but he's not finished yet, the size of him, right on it after a 10-week break but no sooner mastering Cliffs of Dover in the final 1f than grabbed by the winning machine that is What A Welcome; his stamina is coming out all the time.
tracked pace, chased leader over 2f out, edged ahead briefly final 1f

more controlled in his approach this time, pushing on around the home turn and making his rivals work hard to overhaul him, only inside the last 1f, but he's due to be 5 lb higher still, making life difficult for him on the Flat.

has evidently had his problems, racing only once in the previous 14 months, and this was significant for showing he's back on the right path, if also reminding that his quirky side hasn't left him, ungainly under full pressure, having got into it purposefully from off the pace, but being so involved in a finish for the first time in a long time should get his competitive juices flowing again.
waited with, headway 3f out, chased leaders, carried head awkwardly, kept on

hard to explain the lacklustre display, given the way he was going, but this off day was the first of his career, struggling to keep up from 4f out.

A split field, half and half for those who showed up and the 4 who effectively didn't, little between the principals at the end, good form amongst them, Cliffs of Dover not tearing off this time but upping the tempo soon enough to make it a true test.

WHAT A WELCOME boasts a remarkable record to have won 6 of his 7 handicaps, impressive that he immediately rebounded from the one blot on his copybook, another increase in trip making a difference to him, excusably taking a while in overhauling a pair who are themselves better than ever right now but making it look cosy at the very end, suggesting he hasn't peaked just yet.
