fit from Flat, in first-time tongue strap, showed improved form to win for first time in this sphere; mid-field, took keen hold, crept closer 3 out, quickened to lead 2 out, pushed out; he was far better suited by the emphasis on speed than those which chased him home but this was just his second hurdles start for present connections and he's open to further improvement.

looks on a handy mark and shaped well in a race that wasn't run to suit, simply outpaced by a speedier sort in the latter stages; tracked pace, jumped fine, effort 2 out, stayed on; one to be interested in, still unexposed and likely to have strong claims of going one better next time.

confirmed the form of his maiden win while giving the impression a stronger pace would have suited, so may yet do better; held up, not fluent second, in contention home turn, outpaced 2 out, kept on; his Flat form suggests he's likely to stay 2½m.

shaped encouragingly after 4 months off, arguably more inconvenienced than anything else by a steadily-run 2m, especially bearing in mind his staying pedigree; close up, outpaced 2 out, mistake last, ran on; remains open to improvement.

seemed to excel himself from 8 lb out of the weights in a muddling race, though has been going the right way and it wouldn't be a surprise if he backed this up, perhaps at a longer trip (will stay 2½m); mid-field, not fluent third, outpaced approaching 2 out, hit last, stayed on.

A really interesting renewal of this 4-y-o handicap, and most of the potential that existed among this lot beforehand remains intact, as a steady pace meant that the winner was the only one among the principals seen to best effect.

GOLDEN SPEAR fit from Flat, in first-time tongue strap, showed improved form to win for first time in this sphere; mid-field, took keen hold, crept closer 3 out, quickened to lead 2 out, pushed out; he was far better suited by the emphasis on speed than those which chased him home but this was just his second hurdles start for present connections and he's open to further improvement.
