A thorough test under attritional conditions, proven mudlark Aworkinprogress landing a fourth course win as he pulled clear with one who was again strong in the betting despite being out of the weights.

AWORKINPROGRESS (IRE) had been run off his feet on livelier ground at Chepstow but got back on the up returned to the mud, further improvement impossible to rule out granted similar conditions - the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter appeals as an obvious target, particularly as soft/heavy ground has proved the norm for that race the past decade; he jumped soundly in the main under a patient ride and, having taken closer order turning in, stayed on well to lead at the last before holding on gamely for pressure.

CATCH CATCHFIRE might have been 1 lb out of the handicap but produced the sort of performance recent market confidence had predicted, arguably unlucky too; he helped force the pace until taking over 4 out (bumped there) and was still in front when awkward 2 out, then rallying well after losing that lead with a less-than-fluent leap at the past.

INVINCIBLE NAO (FR) is proving consistent in long-distance events but, equally, seems summed up by his mark for now; dropped out, took closer order home turn, plugged on to go third at the last.

VAL DANCER (IRE) ran his usual honest race and would have finished closer but for a couple of uncharacteristic late errors, still close up when not fluent 3 out before no extra after a worse mistake at the last (ridden in third at time).

WHISTLE STOP TOUR (IRE) hails from a misfiring yard and turned in a lacklustre display quickly back over fences, never better than mid-division.

IVANE (FR) is possibly too high in the weights now and was soon done with in this competitive affair once shaken up 4 out.

HIDDEN HISTORY hasn't gone on from his chasing debut win, again strong in the betting here but beaten soon after hitting 5 out, the longer trip neither here nor there.

ALI STAR BERT found this too competitive from 3 lb out of the weights away from Southwell and was never on terms.

SPORTING ACE (IRE) has been on a downward spiral since winning last year's renewal and seems a lost cause now, downing tools after losing his place through a mistake at the ninth, pulled up a circuit out.

MY SILVER LINING (IRE) can probably have a line put through this, her jockey sensing something amiss on the back of 2 uncharacteristic early errors and pulling up after an awkward landing at the sixth (sound when examined post-race).

REGAL BLUE (IRE) looks one with problems, be they physical or temperament, and ran no sort of race tried in cheekpieces after 13 months off, going in snatches long before being pulled up after clambering over the sixteenth, already tailing off at the time.

SURREY QUEST (IRE) has been given a chance by the handicapper and hinted at a revival for much of the way reverted to fences, though the manner in which he dropped away tempers any enthusiasm following yet another breathing operation, helping force the pace from before halfway until bumping into Catch Catchfire 4 out, then folding tamely on the home turn.

ART DECCO proved easy to back and made little impact up 7 lb for winning a weaker race at Exeter, beaten some way out having gone rather in snatches back under more patient tactics.

MAKIN'YOURMINDUP shaped like a well-handicapped horse for much of the way but has now failed to see his race out on both comeback runs after a lengthy absence/breathing operation, legless when pulled up at the last having still been in contention 3 out.
