A warm race on paper, blending together a couple who did very well on the all-weather last winter but were not yet up and running this campaign with several improving horses, the most obvious examples of the latter group coming clear in a thrilling finish, the 2 of them and the third as wide as anything into the straight, very much a theme here this winter and on this card in particular, and the efforts of anything that raced on the inside can be overlooked.

THE GLEN ROVERS has quickly developed into a really likeable horse and only furthered that view with this last-gasp success over a C&D that would have seemed on the sharp side, benefting from the return to a well-run race and taking the favoured route but that's not to take anything away from him, this his fifth win from just 7 runs in all-weather handicaps; waited with, progress around 2f out, edged left briefly early in straight, found plenty to come clear of pack and nail progressive Charlotte's Web final strides.

CHARLOTTE'S WEB (IRE) seemed to have everything in her favour when scrambling home in the Winter Oaks here last time but took a considerable step forward back against males, even if she couldn't quite make it 5 wins on the bounce, looking home for all money when going to the front over 1f out only to be reeled in by another really progressive one who'd followed her in taking the favoured wide route.

KIND OF KISS back up in trip and a huge price, finished closer than on his first 2 handicap starts, though there's a chance he might be a little flattered by his placing the way this developed; patiently ridden, came wide from 3f out, late headway to take third close home.

PENZANCE again strong in the betting, looked firmly on the way back to his best, possibly a shade short of peak fitness returning after 12 weeks off, while he was forced onto the unfavoured inside in the straight to boot but still came home pretty well; in touch, bit outpaced around 2f out, kept on again final 1f; he's most certainly not one to be giving up on yet, and he's already 4 lb below the mark from which he was a good second in the Easter Classic last year, that race likely to be the target again.

DRAGON ICON (IRE) well backed, ran respectably, perhaps making his effort a shade earlier than ideal in a well-run affair, and he did enough to think this trip should be within range; tracked pace, upsides under 3f out, no extra final 1f.

CIVIL LAW (IRE) in first-time visor, is eligible for much weaker races than this nowadays and won't be one to discount when he does drop in grade; raced well off the pace, had to wait for gap around 2f out, late headway.

STORM CATCHER (IRE) shaped as if better for the run after 8 months off, and certainly wasn't helped by being parked wide from early, doing enough to think he retains plenty of enthusiasm and ability; mid-division, upsides under 3f out, no extra final 1f.

URBAN SPRAWL was found out in better company; hampered soon after start, not settle fully and upsides after 3f, not quicken over 2f out.

GENOAH (IRE) who was easy to back, can have this run overlooked, both on account of where he raced (on the inside chasing the leaders) and being shuffled back behind a weakening one under 3f out; remains open to improvement.

YOUTHFUL KING was never a threat after 5 months off.

ROYAL APPROVAL (IRE) won a race at Newcastle last time that is starting to work out, but couldn't be given away in the betting and found things going wrong from the word go; reared slightly leaving stalls, mid-division on inner, lost place over 2f out.

KING'S CODE under an even more positive ride, flopped having a rare start away from Wolverhampton this winter; led, joined after 3f, no response 3f out.
