probably didn't need to improve on his recent handicap form to land a big pot, briefly threatening to idle the race away but having enough time to rally; in touch, pressed leader 5 out, edged ahead before 3 out, idled flat, headed briefly final 50 yds, led again dying strides; he may not be the easiest to place for the rest of the season but it's doubtful that will be of much concern to connections.

ran a fine race bidding to concede 6 lb to the winner back over fences, doing well to rally having been responsible for the strong early gallop; close up, led before fifth, ridden when headed approaching 3 out, led again briefly flat, edged out dying strides; he'll presumably bid to defend his Ascot Chase crown in a month's time.

ran much better than in the Betfair Chase 10 weeks earlier, having his chance but only able to find one pace late, running over this short a trip for the first time since 2016 but equally underlining that he's not as good as he once was; chased leaders, pushed along before 3 out, every chance flat, ran on.

wasn't beaten far but never looked like doing anything more, a sluggish element to the performance in truth; held up, shaken up eleventh, driven before 3 out, plugged on; he's missed the frame just once in the last 2 seasons but has been an expensive one to follow over that time.

on his third trainer in any many seasons, might have needed the run faced with quite a tough task on first outing since leaving Nick Mitchell after 12 months off but did weaken alarmingly quickly; led until before fifth, stayed prominet until before 4 out, stopped quickly.

A smart field below the very top level for the the first running of this valuable prize, acknowledging the Grade 1 wins of the second and third, and a reproduction of some recent handicap form was enough to see the winner edge an exciting finish; the pace through the early stages was strong, making for a proper test at the trip.

TWO FOR GOLD (IRE) probably didn't need to improve on his recent handicap form to land a big pot, briefly threatening to idle the race away but having enough time to rally; in touch, pressed leader 5 out, edged ahead before 3 out, idled flat, headed briefly final 50 yds, led again dying strides; he may not be the easiest to place for the rest of the season but it's doubtful that will be of much concern to connections.
