had announced he was back on track in the Christmas Hurdle after his surprise defeat at the hands of Nichols Canyon on his reappearance, but this victory took his form to another level, surpassing what he achieved in last season's Champion, silencing any doubters who believed him dependent on an easy lead, following up in March appearing a mere formality on this evidence, Faugheen on his way to becoming one of the hurdling greats; led but pressed by Nichols Canyon from the outset, travelled strongly, asserted 2 out, in control when mistake last (jumping couldn't be faulted on the whole), impressive.

wasn't at his absolute peak, running to a similar level as when chasing home Hurricane Fly in this race last year, but quickly banished any memories of his failed attempt over 3m at Christmas - he was reported to be suffering from a lung infection subsequently - and will head to Cheltenham with realistic claims of once again finishing best of the rest; in touch, went with enthusiasm, hit fifth, shaken up to chase leader between last 2, no impression on winner.

allowed an uncontested lead when taking the scalp of a below-par Faugheen in the Morgiana, wasn't afforded the same luxury on this occasion, but there was more to this comprehensive defeat than simply tactics, not at his best for whatever reason, a hard fought win in the Ryanair Hurdle 26 days earlier perhaps having taken the edge off him; close up, inclined to jump right, upsides fifth, ridden when untidy 2 out, weakened; is clearly better than this, though it is hard to see him playing anything other than a bit part at Cheltenham, lengthened odds of around 12/1 for the Champion Hurdle appearing about right.

Featuring the trio at the head of the betting for Cheltenham, this was a cracking renewal of the Irish Champion Hurdle and a race that produced a performance worthy of the occasion, Faugheen at his most imperious, this display marking him down as the best hurdler we have seen for a number of years; it was run at a good gallop from the outset, Faugheen kept honest up front by Nichols Canyon, the latter unable to live with the reigning Champion when he turned on the style from 2 out, Arctic Fire – the third of the Mullins triumvirate - left to claim a distant second.

FAUGHEEN (IRE) had announced he was back on track in the Christmas Hurdle after his surprise defeat at the hands of Nichols Canyon on his reappearance, but this victory took his form to another level, surpassing what he achieved in last season's Champion, silencing any doubters who believed him dependent on an easy lead, following up in March appearing a mere formality on this evidence, Faugheen on his way to becoming one of the hurdling greats; led but pressed by Nichols Canyon from the outset, travelled strongly, asserted 2 out, in control when mistake last (jumping couldn't be faulted on the whole), impressive.
