A cracking running of this long-standing and valuable event, almost half of them last-time-out winners; an honest pace resulted in it starting to unfold before the straight, the winner's surge to the front from widest of all most taking.

IBERICO LORD (FR) capitalised on a slipping mark to bag the third major handicap of his career, seeming suited by the longest trip he's attempted and deserving extra credit for sustaining his burst to the front which came whilst going 6-wide, this a fourth win in the race for the yard since 2013; patiently ridden, travelled well, rapid headway out wide before home turn, quickened to lead entering straight, in command last, hands-and-heels ride; likely to be back in the mid-140s next time and this may have been the time to catch him.

DOUBLE POWERFUL (IRE) made giant strides as a handicapper last season and got his career firmly back on track in one of the deepest top-end events so far this season; dropped out, headway under pressure early in straight, stayed on.

A PAI DE NOM the sole novice and hailing from a major yard that had won this race for the last 2 years, was supported into favouritism and went through it as if still ahead of the handicapper; mid-field, hit first, smooth headway passing usual 3 out, bumped entering straight, one paced from 2 out; now eligible for a Cheltenham Festival handicap and he'd be very interesting if able to sneak into the Martin Pipe, already 2-2 under the stable's conditional.

FASOL remains in the form of his life, turned out again quickly and upped in grade; close up, took keen hold, every chance when bumped home turn, tiring when untidy 2 out; barely stays this trip and one to look out for back at 2½m or shorter.

LANESBOROUGH (IRE) hammered subsequent dual winner (including later on this card) Williethebuilder on his return and continues in good heart for all he didn't go with his usual zest upped to a trip that's clearly within range; mid-division, went in snatches, headway on inner home turn, switched entering straight, never on terms.

IKE SPORT (FR) backed up previous effort over a longer trip in a higher grade than he need be, though is nearing 2 years without a win; raced off the pace, hit seventh, ridden approaching straight, carried left before 2 out, headway from there, mistake last, never landed a blow.

FRENCH SHIP wasn't seen to best effect bidding for a hat-trick, the bulk of his rapid progress having been on more galloping tracks; in touch, lost place home turn, beaten when not fluent 2 out; well worth another chance and the type to go well in the Coral Cup, already successful over C&D this season.

BEAT THE BAT (IRE) was back at what seems his optimum trip with chasing quickly shelved but underperformed; handy, not fluent sixth, pushed along home turn, not clear run briefly entering straight, weakened from 2 out.

WRECKLESS ERIC isn't bred to stay this far and failed to land a blow; raced well off the pace, ridden approaching straight, switched before 2 out, never involved; not one to write off when back at 2m judged on the pick of his efforts last season, the Imperial Cup likely to be a target once more.

KRAK (FR) fared no better returned to hurdling; mid-field, slow third, fourth, behind usual 3 out.

YELLOW STAR (FR) was found out in much better company than when winning at Warwick; prominent, driven home turn, dropped away.

JUST ENNEMI (FR) found the race far too competitive to be making his handicap debut in quickly returned to hurdling; mid-division, mistake first, shaken up passing usual 3 out, well beaten early in straight; should stay this sort of trip but does have plenty to prove all of a sudden having joined present connections for a hefty sum.

GOODWIN (IRE) had the assistance of a promising conditional but found his brief run of good form coming to a halt, showing why all 5 of his wins have been when going the other way round; made running, jumped markedly left, headed entering straight, weakened approaching 2 out.

KING OF THE LAKE has built up an excellent partnership with this 7-lb claimer but was in the process of running below form when departing; taken wide, raced off the pace, good progress sixth, in contention passing usual 3 out, driven entering straight, weakening and just behind Beat The Bat when fell heavily last.

JUST A ROSE (FR) produced an error-strewn round, lacking the know-how for a highly competitive environment at this stage of her career; taken wide, mid-division, labouring badly seventh, pulled up; will probably be better off back in lower grades against just her own sex.
