had clearly come on plenty for his run at Haydock and produced a top-class effort on just his third start at around 3m, well backed late on and ridden with plenty of confidence, that he delivered when the crunch came against one such as Thistlecrack very much to his credit; held up, travelled well, good progress fourteenth, loomed up straight, led last, kept on well, ridden out; with just 2 giving their very best, it would be easy to play down this success, but he's a young horse, unexposed at staying trips and clearly suited by this sort of test, the potential there for more to come when he goes up to the Gold Cup trip, post-race quotes for Cheltenham arguably underestimating his chance in March.

built on the promise of his Betfair Chase run, a better round of jumping enabling him to run close to his best form over fences, a repeat of his 2016 win looking on the cards turning for home before the winner ground him down; prominent, travelled well, led fourteenth, tackled 3 out, ridden after, headed last, stayed on; he will presumably be aimed at the Gold Cup, his Cheltenham record an impressive one.

hadn't run right handed since finishing third to Tea For Two when favourite for the 2015 Kauto Star, no more suited by the track now than he was then, never looking at ease and compounding the situation by again jumping left; chased leaders, jumped left, never travelling well, lost place thirteenth, rallied after 2 out, took moderate third run-in, stayed on, made no impression on first 2; it's easy enough to excuse his runs this season - in contrast to Might Bite - and he remains a leading contender for the Gold Cup come the spring.

upped still further in trip, probably failed to stay, though a significant error contributed to his running below par; patiently ridden, bad mistake twelfth, effort before 4 out, chased leaders next, weakened last; he's likely to bounce back quickly, the Clarence House or the Ascot Chase obvious options.

never looked likely to repeat his standout effort in last season's King George, none of his form since replicating that effort, circumstances falling very favourably that day; in touch, lost place after eleventh, well held before 3 out.

flopped again, serious concerns about his current form and well-being (later said to have bled), the way he capitulated after a mistake far from encouraging; chased leader, not fluent fourth, every chance when mistake thirteenth, ridden after, folded tamely before 3 out; he couldn't be backed with confidence at present.

was ridden more patiently than usual, unlikely to get his own way in front, but didn't get the chance to show how effective that might be, a trademark jumping lapse ending his chance; in touch, jumped left first, fell ninth.

went with all his old zest, but he doesn't have the legs for this level any more when it comes to the crunch, certainly not on good ground, and he was left behind into the straight, set to finish well held when he departed; led, jumped well in main, headed fourteenth, ridden after, weakened before 3 out, mistake there, unseated rider 2 out; the Cotswold may be an option for him.

It would be hard to imagine a more representative field - in terms of a purely domestic line-up - for the mid-season championship for staying chasers than the one which turned up here, 8 of the 10 having won at Grade 1 level, including the last 2 winners of this race, the Cheltenham Gold Cup winners of 2015 and 2018, a dual Betfair Chase winner, the winner of the Melling and Tingle Creek last season and an improving 6-y-o that had sent Cue Card into retirement in winning the Ascot Chase; one of the pair still to win at this level had been runner-up in last season's race, and yet it was the tenth and final runner that carried off the prize as others failed to deliver, Clan des Obeaux, only fourth in the Betfair Chase on his return but only 6 himself and clearly fully deserving of the victory on the day for all that plenty of the others left themselves questions to answer, most notably Might Bite, who clearly isn't himself at present; the race was run at a sound gallop and was a proper test of jumping and stamina, just what this race is designed to be.

CLAN DES OBEAUX (FR) had clearly come on plenty for his run at Haydock and produced a top-class effort on just his third start at around 3m, well backed late on and ridden with plenty of confidence, that he delivered when the crunch came against one such as Thistlecrack very much to his credit; held up, travelled well, good progress fourteenth, loomed up straight, led last, kept on well, ridden out; with just 2 giving their very best, it would be easy to play down this success, but he's a young horse, unexposed at staying trips and clearly suited by this sort of test, the potential there for more to come when he goes up to the Gold Cup trip, post-race quotes for Cheltenham arguably underestimating his chance in March.
