made the most of a good opportunity, running outside competitive handicap company for the first time this season; jumped fine, went with enthusiasm, went prominent after second, led fourth, headed after 2 out, led again before last, driven clear; he's one of the better-weighted runners in the Grand National, though didn't get any further than the fifth in the race last year and finished down the field in the Becher (albeit not knocked about) earlier this season.

faced a stiff task after 10 weeks off but goes well here and probably ran about as well as he ever has, making a bold bid that sadly ended with him collapsing fatally after the race; went in snatches, off pace after second, went prominent eleventh, upsides 3 out, edged ahead after next, headed before last, plugged on.

wasn't on a going day, the small-field scenario perhaps not his thing, though there's no escaping that it was a laboured effort, not at all encouraging ahead of his likely spring targets (holds Grand National entry); in touch, went with little fluency, mistake second, reminders ninth, left behind 4 out.

back over fences, ran badly, going out like a light; led early, chased leader from fourth, pushed along circuit out, folded tamely eleventh; plenty to prove at present.

All 4 ran. Fences: 16. Race Distance Adjustment: +48 yds

Winning Owner: Mr J. Hales

Time: 7m 47.5s Closing Sectional: (4.20f): 72.20s (103.9%)

Three of the 4 are smart performers but 2 of them ran badly and the presence of an exposed 13-y-o in second suggests the winner didn't need to run to his best; the pace was just steady.

UNIONISTE (FR) made the most of a good opportunity, running outside competitive handicap company for the first time this season; jumped fine, went with enthusiasm, went prominent after second, led fourth, headed after 2 out, led again before last, driven clear; he's one of the better-weighted runners in the Grand National, though didn't get any further than the fifth in the race last year and finished down the field in the Becher (albeit not knocked about) earlier this season.
