possibly hasn't completely turned over a new leaf but at least he's shown he can capitalise when a chance presents itself on his last 2 outings, presumably kept fresh specifically for this since Leicester over Christmas and able to defy a reassessed mark from which he'd been beaten 3 times during the autumn/winter; in touch, jumped soundly, typically travelled well, chased leader from 5 out, produced to lead between 4 out and 3 out, slight wobble as he edged left and was closed down approaching last but hard to crab how he went away and asserted inside the final 1f; a case of 'job done' in many ways but other races of this standard tend to take a good deal more winning.

ran at least as well in defeat as when winning at Ascot, kept sharp by another headgear switch; made running, kicked on straight, not fluent 4 out, headed soon after, rallied from 2 out, pressed leader last before left behind final 50 yds; he'll probably go up another 2 lb or more, however.

in first-time cheekpieces, faced a stiffer task in this grade of handicap and probably remains in form, the bigger fences predictably getting in the way; chased leader, typically made mistakes, lost second 5 out, ridden straight, merely plugged on.

was back up in trip but underperformed by recent standards; waited with, mistake seventh, took closer order ninth, shaken up from 4 out, no response next; may benefit from a break now, having been on the go since the autumn.

found his run of good form coming to a halt, a flat effort more likely down to the stage of the season rather than the 7 lb rise in the weights; held up, out wide, took closer order circuit out, shaken up seventh, ridden again tenth, left behind straight.

turned in a first poor effort in this sphere, probably no coincidence it came on firmer ground than previously; went in snatches, close up when slow first, tracked pace after, not fluent fourth, lost ground ninth, rallied briefly home turn, left behind straight; seems best on good going or softer.

Time: 5m 1s Closing Sectional: (2.90f): 42.00s (104.3%)

The end of a long season for most of these and fatigue shone through in all bar 2 of them, crucially Copper West returning from a break and Princeton Royale only just back from one himself; the runner-up wasn't harried in front, lifting the pace in the straight.

COPPER WEST (IRE) possibly hasn't completely turned over a new leaf but at least he's shown he can capitalise when a chance presents itself on his last 2 outings, presumably kept fresh specifically for this since Leicester over Christmas and able to defy a reassessed mark from which he'd been beaten 3 times during the autumn/winter; in touch, jumped soundly, typically travelled well, chased leader from 5 out, produced to lead between 4 out and 3 out, slight wobble as he edged left and was closed down approaching last but hard to crab how he went away and asserted inside the final 1f; a case of 'job done' in many ways but other races of this standard tend to take a good deal more winning.

A PLACE APART (IRE) retried in headgear, ran poorly after 4 months off; held up, shaken up from 5 out, no response, behind when pulled up 3 out, possibly amiss.
