showed much improved form, benefiting no end from a greater test of stamina, back on soft going, a lot to like about his effort, even if he wasn't beating much; led, kicked on 4f out, challenged 2f out, kept on well final 1f, strong at the finish; he's bred for the Derby and has form that entitles him to be a player, particularly if the ground remains soft.

without the cheekpieces this time, ran better than last time, beating the rest convincingly, though he couldn't confirm Sandown placings with the winner, outstayed after posing a threat over 1f out; tracked pace, travelled well, challenged 2f out, edged right, not quicken inside final 1f.

over 2f longer trip, isn't really up to this grade but he ran well; in touch, shaken up 3f out, left behind 2f out, plugged on; he's likely to stay further again.

upped markedly in trip, seemed likely to be suited by that and had shown himself effective in the mud, but he just wasn't in the same form as last time; held up, ridden over 3f out, made no impression.

was well held, up in grade, the effort of trying to land a blow at the winner too much; in touch, shaken up over 3f out, weakened 2f out.

was well held, up in grade on just his second start, inexperience the main issue, though the ground, switched to turf, might have been as well; dropped out, ridden over 3f out, ran green, left behind soon after; he may yet do better at a realistic level.

Winning Owner: Ballylinch Stud & Aquis Farm

Time: 2m 35.34s

Overrounds: Industry SP 110%, Betfair SP 102.3%

Three Derby entries, another also in the Edward VII, made this potentially an informative trial and the winner pushed himself into the Derby reckoning with a much-improved effort, winning against the grain on the afternoon, stamina clearly very much his forte.

LONE EAGLE (IRE) showed much improved form, benefiting no end from a greater test of stamina, back on soft going, a lot to like about his effort, even if he wasn't beating much; led, kicked on 4f out, challenged 2f out, kept on well final 1f, strong at the finish; he's bred for the Derby and has form that entitles him to be a player, particularly if the ground remains soft.

YIBIR without the cheekpieces this time, ran better than last time, beating the rest convincingly, though he couldn't confirm Sandown placings with the winner, outstayed after posing a threat over 1f out; tracked pace, travelled well, challenged 2f out, edged right, not quicken inside final 1f.

GENTLEMAN JOE over 2f longer trip, isn't really up to this grade but he ran well; in touch, shaken up 3f out, left behind 2f out, plugged on; he's likely to stay further again.

ALEAS upped markedly in trip, seemed likely to be suited by that and had shown himself effective in the mud, but he just wasn't in the same form as last time; held up, ridden over 3f out, made no impression.

STAY WELL was well held, up in grade, the effort of trying to land a blow at the winner too much; in touch, shaken up over 3f out, weakened 2f out.

MAN OF RIDDLES (USA) was well held, up in grade on just his second start, inexperience the main issue, though the ground, switched to turf, might have been as well; dropped out, ridden over 3f out, ran green, left behind soon after; he may yet do better at a realistic level.
