Just the 5 runners, but 4 of them have been running at a higher level and this was at least an up-to-scratch renewal, even with the favourite amiss, the winner finally clicking for his new yard and well worth another chance at a Group 1.

LIGHTNING SPEAR down in grade, finally produced the sort of effort promised by his run in the Queen Anne, a fine turn of foot all too much for the placed horses once he got an opening, that auguring well for a return to Group 1 level, with the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes likely to be next; held up, travelled well, had to wait for gap 2f out, quickened to lead final 50 yds, won easily; will continue to give a good account.

ZONDERLAND ran creditably, no reason to think he didn't run close to his Salisbury form, well positioned and going smoothly but with no answer to the winner's turn of foot; never far away, travelled well, ridden over 2f out, led inside final 1f, headed final 50 yds, not quicken.

AROD (IRE) without headgear this time, was in less demanding company and ran his best race of the year, though likely seen to optimum advantage in dictating in a small field; led, travelled well, ridden 2f out, headed inside final 1f, one paced.

TOORMORE (IRE) had to carry a penalty, but turned in a below-par, rather lacklustre display all the same, sweating and a bit edgy beforehand and perhaps not himself; prominent, effort over 2f out, made little impression.

THIKRIYAAT (IRE) well backed, despite a step up in grade against regulars at Group 1 level, ran no sort of race, shaping as if amiss and later reported to have a fibrillating heart; took false step leaving stalls, held up, off the bridle long way out, made no impression; had looked most progressive prior to this and well worth another chance.
