was already having his best season and enhanced that with the biggest win of his career, better than ever in performance terms too under optimum conditions, this intermediate trip ideal, as was the return to less testing ground; prominent, travelled well, led 2 out, driven out; he'll reportedly go for the Stayers' Hurdle but isn't proven at 3m (didn't get home on soft ground in last year's Cleeve Hurdle).

was a beaten favourite but turned in his best effort of the season fresh from 10 weeks off, no easy task trying to give 2 lb to Old Guard over a trip more that rival's optimum; raced wide, never far away, led 4 out, ridden when headed 2 out, kept on; a step back up to 3m will suit in the Stayers' Hurdle, a race he was second in 12 months ago, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he gave a good account again at a big price.

wasn't disgraced in getting a place in the end but it was an unusually laboured effort; raced off the pace, soon under pressure, laboured headway after 2 out, kept on, took third run-in without threatening.

This is a Grade 2 generally swerved by the biggest names, presumably because of its proximity to the Cheltenham Festival, and in that regard this was a typical National Spirit; it was an up-to-scratch renewal based on recent standards, though, with the 3 that dominated the betting/ratings filling the places.

OLD GUARD was already having his best season and enhanced that with the biggest win of his career, better than ever in performance terms too under optimum conditions, this intermediate trip ideal, as was the return to less testing ground; prominent, travelled well, led 2 out, driven out; he'll reportedly go for the Stayers' Hurdle but isn't proven at 3m (didn't get home on soft ground in last year's Cleeve Hurdle).

LIL ROCKERFELLER (USA) was a beaten favourite but turned in his best effort of the season fresh from 10 weeks off, no easy task trying to give 2 lb to Old Guard over a trip more that rival's optimum; raced wide, never far away, led 4 out, ridden when headed 2 out, kept on; a step back up to 3m will suit in the Stayers' Hurdle, a race he was second in 12 months ago, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he gave a good account again at a big price.

CLYNE is operating below his best at present and seems to have lost his confidence with regards jumping, causing problems over fences and hurdles recently; led second, headed when blundered 4 out, weakening when bad mistake 2 out, lost third run-in.

VALUE AT RISK back over hurdles, was flying too high in this grade and couldn't get in the race, struggling 3 out and never on terms.

NORMAN THE RED on first outing since leaving Paddy Butler after 11 months off, was out of depth and surely flattered, just plodding on and never on terms.

DR DES (IRE) faced a stiffer task out of novice company and was well held; led early, mistakes, headed second, struggling 4 out, well beaten.

UBAK (FR) went wrong after a bad mistake 3 out (fourth at the time) and was fatally injured.
