under a penalty, improved further and completed his hat-trick in fine style, powering through the race and having plenty still in the tank to repel 2 far more experienced stablemates late on, producing a performance sure to have seen him go close in many a Grade 1 novice, much as Our Duke had 2 years prior; in touch, travelled well, took closer order before 5 out, jumped on 3 out, ridden approaching last, stayed on well; stamina is clearly his forte, but he’s by no means a sluggard and will be well worth his place at a higher level next time (open to further progress).

Non Runners: OSCAR KNIGHT (IRE), SCOIR MEAR (IRE), FITZHENRY (IRE). Fences: 24.

Winning Owner: Mrs S. Ricci

Time: 7m 48.4s Closing Sectional: (3.85f): 65.00s (95.7%)

A very competitive renewal of Ireland’s most valuable handicap chase and, while it was a totally different spectacle to the year before, it was still a demanding race stamina-wise, the gallop on the final circuit ensuring that only a handful of runners remained in contention at the fourth last, with the well-backed Burrows Saint posting a performance up there with the very best this race has produced in recent memory, his rating bettered only by Our Duke and Bellshill since the turn of the millennium, leading home a remarkable 1-2-3 for the irrepressible Willie Mullins, who was winning the race for the first time and also responsible for the eventual fifth.

BURROWS SAINT (FR) under a penalty, improved further and completed his hat-trick in fine style, powering through the race and having plenty still in the tank to repel 2 far more experienced stablemates late on, producing a performance sure to have seen him go close in many a Grade 1 novice, much as Our Duke had 2 years prior; in touch, travelled well, took closer order before 5 out, jumped on 3 out, ridden approaching last, stayed on well; stamina is clearly his forte, but he’s by no means a sluggard and will be well worth his place at a higher level next time (open to further progress).

ISLEOFHOPENDREAMS produced his best effort to date and matched last year's runner-up placing despite his advancing years, knuckling down well in vain pursuit of one half his age late on; chased leaders, ridden from 2 out, stayed on; a likeable sort, he deserves to win one these valuable staying events at some stage, though time clearly isn't on his side in that regard.

ACAPELLA BOURGEOIS (FR) ran well on his first try at a marathon trip, this performance in a much more competitive environment than for his Clonmel victory confirming that he's right back to his best after a season in the wilderness; prominent, led twelfth, headed fifteenth, led again home turn, ridden from 3 out, one paced, pulled clear of remainder.

SNUGSBOROUGH BENNY (IRE) ran creditably on his first try beyond 3m, albeit without ever reaching the principals, the patient tactics employed to conserve his stamina meaning he had little hope from so far back; patiently ridden, not always fluent, steady headway from early final circuit, still plenty to do 4 out, ridden home turn, kept on.

BELLOW MOME (FR) upped in trip, shaped as if still in good form, his stamina ebbing away late on having been forced to take a wider route than most due to constantly jumping out to his left; chased leaders, close up when ridden entering straight, weakened from 2 out; will benefit from return to 3m.

ROARING BULL (IRE) ran below form, the longer trip probably just a bridge too far at this stage of his career; in touch, ridden from eighteenth, in contention briefly 4 out, no extra from early in straight.

WOODS WELL (IRE) back up markedly in trip, was below form; held up, hampered sixth, some headway before 5 out, ridden before next, never landed a blow.

TOUT EST PERMIS (FR) arrived on an upward curve and a 4-timer, but he didn't last out over the markedly longer trip after 3 months off; mid-field, not fluent nineteenth, took closer order approaching 4 out, ridden approaching home turn, weakened, not knocked about once held; he remains open to improvement with an eye on a more suitable task.

WHISPERINTHEBREEZE shaped much better than the bare result suggests, making his effort much earlier than ideal and paying the price late on; in touch, travelled well, crept closer eighth, led fifteenth, pressed on next, clear seventeenth, reduced advantage 4 out, headed home turn, clouted 3 out, weakened.

OUT SAM again ran poorly; raced off the pace, ridden before 5 out, mistake before 3 out.

ARKWRISHT (FR) had shaped much better than the result when sixth in this race last year, but he hasn't really fired this season and, in the end, merely added to what has been a disappointing season; mid-division, ridden from nineteenth, weakened from home turn, behind when blundered 3 out.

A TOI PHIL (FR) turned in a rare poor effort, possibly just feeling the effects of a relatively busy time of things of late, having taken in both Cheltenham and Aintree; raced off the pace, struggling from sixteenth, tailed off.

ANY SECOND NOW (IRE) arrived on a crest of a wave having finally put it all together over fences at Cheltenham, but he was let down by his jumping after 6 weeks off, chasing the leaders when falling at the eighth; assuming he's none the worse for this, he looks well worth another try at a marathon trip.

AUVERGNAT (FR) clearly wasn't 100% on the day; mid-field, not fluent ninth, lost place eleventh, behind when pulled up thirteenth.

BLOW BY BLOW (IRE) has lost his way completely; in rear, went in snatches, not fluent fifteenth, pulled up 4 out.

C'EST JERSEY (FR) upped in trip and back in headgear, failed to complete after 10 weeks off, suffering an x-rated fall at the sixth.

DOUNIKOS (FR) ran no sort of race, possibly just finding the race coming too soon after his Aintree exertions 16 days previously; raced off the pace, struggling sixteenth, tailed off when pulled up before eighteenth.

FOREVER GOLD (IRE) was third in this race last year but ran no sort of the race this time around despite presumably being campaigned with this race in mind all season, time possibly just catching up with him; chased leaders, lost place early final circuit, not fluent nineteenth, pulled up 3 out.

GENERAL PRINCIPLE (IRE) who won this race last year from a 5 lb lower mark, was faced with a very different scenario this time around and quite simply failed to give his running, his performances at Cheltenham and Aintree perhaps having left a mark; chased leaders, not fluent fourth, lost place before 5 out, pulled up before 3 out.

GUN DIGGER (IRE) failed to build on the promise of his Cheltenham run; mid-field, lost place from sixteenth, pulled up 3 out.

JURY DUTY (IRE) turned in a lacklustre display just 16 days on from his Aintree mishap, never in any sort of rhythm jumping-wise; mid-division, not always fluent, behind when pulled up 3 out.

KIMBERLITE CANDY (IRE) ran poorly after 9 weeks off; mid-field, lost place thirteenth, not fluent fourteenth, pulled up sixteenth.

MEASUREOFMYDREAMS (IRE) had attracted strong support at the Cheltenham 6 weeks previously, but he didn't get the chance to belatedly justify that confidence, exiting at the very first fence.

MINELLA ROCCO (IRE) is a shadow of his former self, cheekpieces/tongue strap refitted to no avail; mid-division, not fluent seventeenth, ridden before 5 out, behind when pulled up 3 out.

MONBEG NOTORIOUS (IRE) is becoming increasingly temperamental and simply can't be trusted as a betting proposition these days; in touch, lost place before sixth, struggling early final circuit, pulled up before 5 out.

PAIROFBROWNEYES (IRE) departed early in this race for the second year in succession, out of it at the fourth on this occasion.

SHADY OPERATOR (IRE) had long since looked the type to be suited by this sort of test, but he was never able to reach a challenging position after 6 weeks off, his rider eventually calling it quits before the straight; raced off the pace, labouring eighteenth, pulled up 3 out.

SHATTERED LOVE (IRE) made a promising start to the campaign, but she hasn't reached the heights connections anticipated and suddenly finds herself with plenty to prove following another abject performance, her race over before stamina became an issue; mid-division, not fluent seventeenth, ridden before next, struggling when pulled up nineteenth.

TOTAL RECALL (IRE) was again let down by his jumping to a large extent after 3 months off and just hasn't gone on since chasing home Al Boum Photo at Tramore in January; led, jumped left, headed when hit twelfth, bad mistake fifteenth, lost place before next, pulled up 4 out.

VALSEUR LIDO (FR) back in cheekpieces, was merely making up the numbers for the Gigginstown squad; mid-division, hampered sixth, labouring seventeenth, pulled up 4 out.
