upped markedly in trip, was well backed and resumed progress to run out a highly impressive winner on handicap debut, clearly relishing the increased emphasis on stamina and powering further clear of his rivals at the line, in the process producing the best performance in this race since Flashing Steel’s victory off top weight in 1995; chased leaders, travelled well, went on before 4 out, shaken up from next, in command between last 2, stayed on strongly; he’s as exciting a prospect as there is in National Hunt racing at present and, with further progress on the cards after only 4 starts over fences, he rates a major contender for more top honours in 2017/18, looking tailor-made for the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Non Runners: DOUBLE SEVEN (IRE), ANOTHER HERO (IRE), TELL US MORE (IRE), BAIE DES ILES (FR), MYSTICAL KNIGHT. Fences: 24.

Winning Owner: Cooper Family Syndicate

Time: 7m 47.5s Closing Sectional: (2.40f): 38.70s (100.0%)

A somewhat controversial renewal of Ireland’s most prestigious handicap chase, the fact very nearly half of the 28-runner field were represented by just one owner in Gigginstown House Stud leading to calls of an unfair monopoly in some circles in the build-up, though any notions of an unsavoury race were blown clean out of the water by the well-backed favourite Our Duke, who produced a stunning performance in running out a most impressive winner from 2016 runner-up Bless The Wings and the progressive Abolitionist in what was a well-run affair.

OUR DUKE (IRE) upped markedly in trip, was well backed and resumed progress to run out a highly impressive winner on handicap debut, clearly relishing the increased emphasis on stamina and powering further clear of his rivals at the line, in the process producing the best performance in this race since Flashing Steel’s victory off top weight in 1995; chased leaders, travelled well, went on before 4 out, shaken up from next, in command between last 2, stayed on strongly; he’s as exciting a prospect as there is in National Hunt racing at present and, with further progress on the cards after only 4 starts over fences, he rates a major contender for more top honours in 2017/18, looking tailor-made for the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

BLESS THE WINGS (IRE) who was runner-up in this race last year, again ran well, not getting anywhere near as close to landing the spoils as he did in 2016, but sticking to his task admirably in the straight; waited with, steady headway from early final circuit, chased leaders 4 out, ridden from next, kept on, no impression on winner.

ABOLITIONIST (IRE) upped in trip, improved again and shaped a bit better than the distance beaten suggests, his exertions in trying to catch the winner in the straight probably costing him second in the end; mid-field, went with enthusiasm, good progress from 5 out, chased leader entering straight, ridden before 2 out, held when untidy last; sure to be of interest again.

THUNDER AND ROSES (IRE) ran about as well as he has all season just 9 days on from his early Aintree exit, doing his best work at the finish as others wilted; in touch, ridden from 4 out, shuffled back before nineteenth, stayed on again straight.

GENERAL PRINCIPLE (IRE) upped markedly in trip, produced best effort over fences faced with his stiffest task to date, this at least opening up more options for him going forward if nothing else; mid-field, took closer order before 4 out, ridden entering straight, one paced.

NOBLE ENDEAVOR (IRE) back up in trip, ran respectably after 5 weeks off, losing his pitch slightly at a crucial stage but sticking to his task well enough to suggest he's worth persevering with at marathon distances; in touch, lost place when not fluent nineteenth, untidy 4 out, ridden entering straight, plugged on again from 3 out.

HAYMOUNT (IRE) shaped better than the bare result, having done well to get into contention in the straight; waited with, travelled better than most, badly hampered eighth, still plenty to do 5 out, headway approaching next, ridden 3 out, fourth 2 out, effort flattened out; he remains relatively unexposed at marathon trips.

ALPHA DES OBEAUX (FR) upped markedly in trip, came in for a more patient ride than usual and never really threatened after suffering early interference, his season winding down in anticlimatic fashion after early promise; held up, badly hampered eighth, some headway after 5 out, ridden from next, no extra from 2 out.

MEASUREOFMYDREAMS (IRE) back down in trip, turned in best effort of the season after just 9 days off, but was still fairly well held in the end; mid-field, some headway before 4 out, ridden entering straight, faded.

CLARCAM (FR) upped markedly in trip, never threatened from an early stage.

FIRST LIEUTENANT (IRE) was well held after 5 weeks off; raced off the pace, struggling seventeenth.

RAZ DE MAREE (FR) can have this run overlooked; soon steadied, saddle slipped second, pulled up before fourth.

THE GAME CHANGER (IRE) continues out of sorts, acknowledging he had little hope of staying this trip; in rear, blundered fifteenth, struggling next, tailed off when pulled up nineteenth.
