has made a hugely promising start over fences, dismissing a strong field to follow up a recent maiden victory, and looks destined for top honours in this division; chased leaders, jumped well in main, untidy 4 out, smooth headway entering straight, jumped on 2 out, asserted before last, impressive; has plenty of options now and remains open to improvement.

took a step forward from chasing debut, despite not jumping with the same fluency, although he shouldn't be crabbed too much for tending to go left in the latter stages, merely following Real Steel's lead; close up, not always fluent, left in front sixth, headed 5 out, every chance when went left again 2 out, kept on, pulled clear of remainder; capable of better still and sure to win more races.

compromised his chance by repeatedly jumping left (a trait he had exhibited over hurdles) and did very well to finish as close as he did under the circumstances; made running, jumped markedly left, headed after a particularly wayward leap fifth, led again 5 out, collared 2 out, no extra; likely to match the pick of his hurdles form when back on a left-handed track.

failed to meet expectations, unable to even match the form of his chasing debut, clearly not 100% on the day, the writing on the wall some way out; mid-field, not always fluent, pushed along 5 out, laboured headway after 4 out, one paced, not unduly punished; well worth another chance.

All 13 ran. Fences: 14.

Winning Owner: Gigginstown House Stud

Time: 5m 5.2s

As competitive a non-Festival novice as is likely to be found, the majority of these having already run to a useful level over fences, and the form has a solid look to it, a pair that had finished runner-up at this level in novice hurdles coming to the fore; the pace was sound and Valseur Lido was only the second 5-y-o since 1994 to emerge victorious.

VALSEUR LIDO (FR) has made a hugely promising start over fences, dismissing a strong field to follow up a recent maiden victory, and looks destined for top honours in this division; chased leaders, jumped well in main, untidy 4 out, smooth headway entering straight, jumped on 2 out, asserted before last, impressive; has plenty of options now and remains open to improvement.

APACHE STRONGHOLD (IRE) took a step forward from chasing debut, despite not jumping with the same fluency, although he shouldn't be crabbed too much for tending to go left in the latter stages, merely following Real Steel's lead; close up, not always fluent, left in front sixth, headed 5 out, every chance when went left again 2 out, kept on, pulled clear of remainder; capable of better still and sure to win more races.

BLACKLOUGH (IRE) ran to similar level as on chasing bow, which was nowhere near good enough in this grade; mid-division, laboured headway after 3 out, plugged on; will be better off in handicaps.

CAUSE OF CAUSES (USA) more exposed than rest, produced a laboured effort in first-time blinkers and tongue strap after 7 months off; held up, early reminders, mistake sixth, merely passed beaten horses.

SADLER'S RISK (IRE) up in grade, ran well below the level he'd shown on his previous tries over fences; held up, hit seventh, plugged on, never a threat.
