confirmed the promise of his Sandown run in ostensibly calmer waters, mistakes not getting in the way this time; in touch, went with zest, produced to lead soon after 3 out, saved worst jump for last and lost momentum, rallied well, went clear late; he's still relatively unexposed as a staying handicap hurdler, and the way he travels suggests he'll be able to hold his own in the Final of this.

bounced back from an uncharacteristically flat run, perhaps not right that day to miss 11 weeks, though this trip again stretched him, campaigning no small factor in his failure to win so far in Britain; disputed lead early, remained prominent, every chance when shaken up 3 out, clear second last, tied up final 50 yds.

can't seem to get a clear run at things, ending up running at least as well as when behind a handicap blot at Cheltenham 3 months earlier but only after looking rusty; mid-division, shuffled back early final circuit, outpaced 4 out, effort 2 out, kept on well, took third on line.

took a step back in the right direction back over hurdles after 3 months off, his path this season perhaps changed for the spring, though he's now rated too low to get a spot in the Final (ninth off 6 lb higher in 2017); mid-division, shaken up before 4 out, effort from 2 out, ran on, not unduly punished.

was presumably having a pre-Festival pipe-opener back over hurdles and left the firm impression he still needed the race, shaping a lot better than the bare result; went with enthusiasm, disputed lead until second, remained prominent, led again early final circuit, tackled 3 out, weakened from next; he's still only a 9-y-o but a good number appear to have passed him by on the Gold Cup scene.

Qualifiers for a prize further down the line can, by nature, be less-than-solid pieces of form, though this latest one in the Pertemps series had a particularly muddling feel, run over just shy of 3m yet producing a finish so bunched that the first 7 home were covered by a mere 8 lengths, that despite stamina seeming to be tested as a pair outpaced before most had worked their way into the frame by the line.

FLEMCARA (IRE) confirmed the promise of his Sandown run in ostensibly calmer waters, mistakes not getting in the way this time; in touch, went with zest, produced to lead soon after 3 out, saved worst jump for last and lost momentum, rallied well, went clear late; he's still relatively unexposed as a staying handicap hurdler, and the way he travels suggests he'll be able to hold his own in the Final of this.
