getting weight from 2 horses he would have beaten but for falling when last seen, made the most of a good opportunity on his first start since April, the race falling apart behind him but this performance at least as good as he's ever produced; prominent, travelled well, led before 4 out, idled after 2 out, ridden out; he now heads to the Tingle Creek, which will be a sterner test of how far he can go in his second season.

proved at least as good as ever, back over fences and with the benefit of a run, just not easy to place this season after achieving more than could reasonably have been expected last; waited with, effort straight, second when mistake 2 out, kept on.

allowed his own way in front, surprisingly, shaped as if needing the run after 7 months off, the effort reasonably encouraging for tasks ahead, qualified for a lower grade than this; led until second, led fourth, ridden home turn, headed before 4 out, weakened.

back over fences, was well held, in a race in which he was second off a mark 5 lb lower in 2016/17; close up, led second, headed fourth, labouring after eighth, bad mistake 3 out; he won't be easy to place this winter.

without the headgear this time, had won this race in 2015/16, but hadn't won since and was well held on first outing since leaving Paul Nicholls after 6 months off; held up, not fluent first, labouring seventh.

restricted to just one run last season, on the face of it didn't offer much after 11 months off, though ridden in a style that wouldn't have suited, best when forcing things; steadied behind leaders, pushed along fifth, weakened seventh, pulled up 4 out; he'll presumably go next for the Tingle Creek, a close fourth in the race last season, and likely to give a much better idea of his current form.
