The traditional opener to the turf Flat season, the first 2-y-o race of the year as well, the standard varying quite a bit from year to year, this renewal won by potentially one of the very best winners, certainly the best since The Last Lion, a different class on paper to the rest, bought for €225,000, with the other 3 in the frame making less than £15,000 between them, a high view of the form backed up by the timefigure.

PERSIAN FORCE (IRE) (€75,000F, €225,000Y: by Mehmas: second foal: brother to useful 2-y-o 5f (including Super Sprint) winner Gubbass: dam unraced) strong in the betting, made plenty of appeal on paper, on looks too, and ran to a useful level right away, well above average for a winner of this race and likely to be a contender at Royal Ascot; in touch, travelled well, quickened to lead over 1f out, in command soon after, well on top finish; sure to improve and one to keep on the right side.

PRIMROSE RIDGE (8,000Y: by Aclaim: second foal: dam, maiden (stayed 7f), half-sister to useful winner up to 6f Perfect Flight out of useful winner up to 1m (2-y-o 4.5f-6f winner) Pretty Girl, half-sister to very smart winner up to 1½m Mutamam) bred more for speed than stamina, knew what was required and showed a fair bit of ability; soon led, shaken up over 1f out, headed soon after, kept on, no match for winner; she was clued up and others may have more improvement in them.

JIFFY BOY (1,500Y: by Mondialiste: third foal: dam, 2-y-o 6f winner, half-sister to useful 2-y-o 5f/6f winner Alicante Dawn) a cheap yearling and about the smallest in the field, was a morning gamble and showed ability on debut, likely to know more next time; slowly into stride, in touch, ridden over 2f out, not quicken, kept on inside final 1f, never on terms; should improve.

MASCAPONE (€12,000F, £4,500Y: by Massaat: second foal: dam, 7f/1m winner, half-sister to smart winner up to 2¼m (stays 2½m) Rainbow Dreamer) one of 2 in the field by the Dewhurst and 2000 Guineas runner-up Massaat, was only a cheap purchase as a yearling, but he has more about him than most of these and made a promising start, quite badly in need of experience but making a promising forward move before that petered out; slowly into stride, in rear, ran green, good headway over 1f out, hung left inside final 1f, not quicken final 50 yds; will improve, and up to winning a race in the north at least.

EVOLICATT (by Massaat: third foal: dam 2-y-o 5.7f-7f winner) the better backed of her stable's 2 runners, shaped with a little encouragement on debut, likely to know more next time; slowly into stride, raced off the pace, ran green, pushed along early, stayed on approaching final 1f, never on terms; should improve.

TEATIME TIPPLE (by Pastoral Pursuits: fifth foal: dam winner up to 1¼m (2-y-o 5f-1m winner) who stayed 1½m) didn't look ready beforehand and shaped with a little encouragement on debut; pulled way into prominent position after 1f, ridden halfway, weakened over 1f out; may do better.

BLATANT (20,000Y: by Brazen Beau: first foal: dam unraced out of smart 10.4f-1½m winner Savanne, won French Group 3 event) hinted at ability on debut, running as if he'd be fitter for the outing; steadied at the start, took keen hold, shaken up before halfway, ran green, headway over 1f out, effort flattened out; should do better.
