proved better than ever, suited by the 2f longer trip, and finally got off the mark for the year, this track suiting him well, given the tactics employed; dropped out, effort early in straight, headway 2f out, good progress to lead inside final 1f, stayed on strongly, well on top finish; he'll continue to be a major contender in good staying races, though it's a shame he isn't in the Cesarewitch, a race which would play to his strengths, probably rather more than the Long Distance Cup will.

was less exuberant early on than he had been at York and saw things out much better as a result, beaten only by a strong stayer, running up to his best; held up, travelled well, smooth headway 3f out, led briefly around 1f out, stuck to task; given how well he handled Ascot earlier in the year, it would be no surprise were he to give a good account if sent for the Long Distance Cup.

has generally run creditably this year, just a shade below last autumn's level, and did so again, unable to repeat his win in the 2016 renewal; waited with, headway straight, led 2f out, headed over 1f out, stayed on; likely a few of these, he'll presumably head next to Ascot and another race he won last year, the Long Distance Cup, though it will surely need a little extra for him to get off the mark for the year in that.

wasn't disgraced, though he seemed rather lethargic, taking a while to get to the front; ridden early, led after 1f, joined halfway, headed 4f out, lost place soon after, plugged on.

in first-time cheekpieces and under a very different rider from usual, was well held again after flattering to deceive, the headgear seemingly having a positive effect until it proved to have a negative one; prominent, tanked along, led on bridle 4f out, headed 2f out, found nothing.

The last 2 winners of this race were in the line-up, in a field of mostly well-established stayers with little to choose between them on their best form, the 3-y-o winner an exception to that and improving past them, his stamina drawn out more than ever before.

DESERT SKYLINE (IRE) proved better than ever, suited by the 2f longer trip, and finally got off the mark for the year, this track suiting him well, given the tactics employed; dropped out, effort early in straight, headway 2f out, good progress to lead inside final 1f, stayed on strongly, well on top finish; he'll continue to be a major contender in good staying races, though it's a shame he isn't in the Cesarewitch, a race which would play to his strengths, probably rather more than the Long Distance Cup will.
