made the most of the weight he was getting from the runner-up, upped in trip after 7 months off, doing just enough once in front and remaining with just a sole defeat over fences; patiently ridden, ridden entering straight, produced to lead 2 out, idled run-in, always holding on; proving his effectiveness over this far opens up new options, though he'll need to make some progress to challenge in open company at the highest level.

ran creditably returned to chasing over a trip short of his optimum after 6 months off, this easily his best effort since landing the King George VI Chase last winter; made running, awkward first, joined 3 out, edged out next, rallied run-in.

has clearly had his issues and, despite having a good record fresh, shaped as if needing the run after 11 months off; prominent, upsides 3 out, shaken up straight, beaten when blundered and almost unseated rider 2 out; next run likely to reveal more.

A small field but there was little to separate them on ratings, the runner-up conceding weight to the rest; the gallop was sensible given the testing conditions.
